A Father once sent forth two of his children to do something for him. One was bidden to go and take some message to a poor sick woman, the other was told to go and sweep out a certain room. Neither of the children were told how far they would have to go, but each had sufficient directions given him to enable him to find the house to which he was sent. Their Father told them that they must attend carefully to his directions, for otherwise they would most likely lose the way. And he warned them that they would meet with many difficulties and dangers, which he showed them how to avoid; and he gave them, moreover, many helps to keep their errand in remembrance, and to pass safely through the dangers and hardships of the way. So he sent them forth. Now the one of these children who was sent to take the message to the poor sick woman, before he had gone far, met with a number of other children who persuaded him to play with them at various games, and to go to a fair and see one wonderful sight or show after another. He did not like to tell them that his Father had sent him with a message to an old sick woman, for fear they should laugh at him and his Father too, and he thought he should have plenty of time, after amusing himself awhile, to find out the sick woman and do his errand. But he became so taken up with his companions and their droll ways and pleasant amusements, that after a bit he quite forgot all about his Father, and the work he had to do, and did not notice how the time was passing, until at last a very grave-looking...
