This annually published Bibliography provides an overview of cartographical literature published around the world. Each annual volume lists approximately 2,000 monographs and articles published in some 400 periodicals. These are all analysed by an international group of collaborating experts. Among the topics covered are the history of cartography, cartographic personalities and institutions, the making of maps, areas such as topographical or atlas cartography, or maps for the blind, film and screen maps and the use of maps. Titles are listed in their original language and can be looked up either in the Author Index or in the English, French or German list of contents.




A Cartographic Journey of Race, Gender and Power

This book locates spatial dimensions possible for a global identity, while incorporating the presence of collaborative and contentious religious, psycho-social and physical borders. It highlights the significance of space in the construction of racial, gender, religious, cultural idiosyncrasies where private and public space projects the power mechanisms which allocate borders. The literary narratives discussed in this collection project a trajectory of voices of the East and West, male and female, crossing boundaries between identity, race, gender and class. The book proffers that spatial borders are social constructs to propagate the power mechanisms of hierarchical structures, defying imbrications, explored here, which may be used to reflect diversity as a model for global space. These explorations are journeys back and forth in time and space towards hierarchies formed through the imposition of borders defining race, gender and power which may be considered ‘post’ in the postmodern, postcolonial, post 9/11, post-secular and postfeminist senses.

Cartographic Strategies of Postmodernity

The last fifty years have witnessed the growing pervasiveness of the figure of the map in critical, theoretical, and fictional discourse. References to mapping and cartography are endemic in poststructuralist theory, and, similarly, geographically and culturally diverse authors of twentieth-century fiction seem fixated upon mapping. While the map metaphor has been employed for centuries to highlight issues of textual representation and epistemology, the map metaphor itself has undergone a transformation in the postmodern era. This metamorphosis draws together poststructuralist conceptualizations of epistemology, textuality, cartography, and metaphor, and signals a shift away from modernist preoccupations with temporality and objectivity to a postmodern pragmatics of spatiality and subjectivity. Cartographic Strategies of Postmodernity charts this metamorphosis of cartographic metaphor, and argues that the ongoing reworking of the map metaphor renders it a formative and performative metaphor of postmodernity.

Cartographic Expeditions and Visual Culture in the Nineteenth-Century Americas

During the nineteenth century, gridding, graphing, and surveying proliferated as never before as nations and empires expanded into hitherto "unknown" territories. Though nominally geared toward justifying territorial claims and collecting scientific data, expeditions also produced vast troves of visual and artistic material. This book considers the explosion of expeditionary mapping and its links to visual culture across the Americas, arguing that acts of measurement are also aesthetic acts. Such visual interventions intersect with new technologies, with sociopolitical power and conflict, and with shifting public tastes and consumption practices. Several key questions shape this examination: What kinds of nineteenth-century visual practices and technologies of seeing do these materials engage? How does scientific knowledge get translated into the visual and disseminated to the public? What are the commonalities and distinctions in mapping strategies between North and South America? This monumental map of the world was created by the monk Fra Mauro in his monastery on the island of San Michele in the Venetian lagoon.
