Biography of the Class of 1838 of the College of New Jersey (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Biography of the Class of 1838 of the College of New Jersey It is not intended in this little book to claim for the Class of 1838 any special superiority over other classes which have preceded and have followed it. It only asks that this be remembered and honored as one of many excellent classes which have gone forth from our Alma Mater. Its chief attraction, in the eyes of its surviving members, is that it is our class. One object in the preparation of this little work is to recall to ourselves the old memories and associations of college times, and thus, in a measure, to enjoy again the delights of that halcyon period of human life - a period whose recollections are now mellowed by the lapse of half a century, and made more sacred by the havoc death has wrought among the associates of those days. Here let me quote a few sentences from the pen of Judge William Patterson, the distinguished author of "The Biography of the Class of 1835," in which he expresses, in tender and poetic language, the very feeling which prompted (in part) the preparation of this similar work: "It is difficult to convey to the uninitiated an idea of the feelings and associations aroused by college memories. Strong at all times to the individual who can cherish aspirations other than those of a nature purely selfish, they culminate, when, after the lapse of many years, the few who remain nearing the ultima thule of the downward slope meet, perhaps to come together nevermore on this side of The River, to talk of what always will be clothed in the freshness of green - of dream-life and a border land without a limit or a shore, and tell the same old story told in the heretofore and to be told in the hereafter, yet varied in infinity as the leaves upon the grass or sands by the murmuring ocean tides. Fifty Years of Princeton '77

Book Description

Excerpt from Fifty Years of Princeton '77: A Fifty-Four Year Record of the Class of 1877 of Princeton College and University, 1873, 1877, 1927 In brief the Class of '77, which was drawn from twenty-seven States, came chiefly from Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, because Princeton never after the Civil War recovered her great former prestige in the South; this typical American composition had been brought up with man ners and customs derived from traditions of England, Scotland and Ireland with little other racial influence. It is not difficult, for example, to trace the very strong English taste of Pyne back to his father, who was of direct Eng lish birth, and to account for the son's love of English culture and of land scape gardening. The remarkable administrative and executive ability of Thompson and his courage in fighting the corrupt spoils system of appoint ments in the State of Delaware is of English type; many other examples could be given of our legislators, such as Biggs and our surgeons, such as Hartley.
