Architecture Inspired by Nature

Book Description

The book brings together the research completed during 10 editions of International Seminars of Bionics, organized by the School of Architecture of the University of Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, several of them in partnership with the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urbanism, Bucharest, carried out in Spain and in Romania. The articles here consider advanced bionic design principles, implementing them to an impressive variety of application fields, including, but not limited to, urban planning and landscape, public space, architecture and building structures, design and detailing, application of natural dynamic processes, bio-digital architecture, innovative materials based on living organisms (micro-algae), and nano-modified materials. A particular focus is given to light and perception of light. To illustrate the principles developed, this contributed volume includes descriptions and full-color images of the experimental projects created during the workshops held in the framework of these ISB meetings: Learning from Nature, Integrating Bionics (2009); Adaptability, Efficiency and Biostructures (2010); Bionics and Innovation (2011); Forms and Structures Inspired by Nature (2016, 2017); Furniture Inspired by Natural Models (2018); Relation between Structure and Envelope: Light Structures (2019); Light, from Nature to Architecture. Structures Inspired in Nature (2020); Light in Architecture and Design: A Bionic Perspective (2021); Sustainable Thinking and Bionics (2022).

Bionics in Health Care

Book Description

Bionics involves adding artificial parts to the human body. Today's scientists are making more advanced bionics than ever before. This cutting-edge research is improving people's lives. Bionics in Health Care covers the past, present, and future of this technology.

Organic Bionics

Book Description

The first reference on this emerging interdisciplinary research area at the interface between materials science and biomedicine is written by pioneers in the field, who address the requirements, current status and future challenges. Focusing on inherently conducting polymers, carbon nanotubes and graphene, they adopt a systematic approach, covering all relevant aspects and concepts: synthesis and fabrication, properties, introduction of biological function, components of bionic devices and materials requirements. Established bionic devices, such as the bionic ear are examined, as are emerging areas of application, including use of organic bionic materials as conduits for bone re-growth, spinal cord injury repair and muscle regeneration. The whole is rounded off with a look at future prospects in sustainable energy generation and storage. Invaluable reading for materials scientists, polymer chemists, electrotechnicians, chemists, biologists, and bioengineers.

Bionics

Book Description

The potential of connecting technology between live beings and manufactured items opens up a vista of exciting research. The topic of "bionics" explores the study of mechanical systems that function like living organisms or specific parts of living organisms: that seems straight from scenes of a science fiction tale. But, with each passing day, the connection between technology and biology seems to open up several interesting and sometimes a boon to mankind. The field of bionics encompasses the construction and use of robotic arms that offer relief to the maimed, electrodes reroute nerves to achieve specific pathways, tissue engineering, cochlear implants, artificial hearts to bionic eyes to name a few. Bionics research has also propelled research in the field of aviation and computer science (an interesting field of artificial neural networks). This book shall include the history, research into the field of bionics along with various aspects of the products/technologies that use bionics and the scope of this field of research. Through this book, the editors hope to increase the interest and research in this field to open up vistas in research.
