Bucks County Adventures for Kids

Book Description

Bucks County Adventures for Kids - Volume III Authors Dashiell Cosdon and his grandfather Carl LaVO take kids, parents and grandparents on 25 unforgettable adventures the entire family can enjoy in historic and beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The two authors have chosen top attractions for day trips after many years exploring every corner of the county since Dashiell and sister Margaux were toddlers. Bucks is a rarity as a cradle of democracy. We visit where George Washington and the Continental Army made their famous crossing of the Delaware River in 1776. We explore two castles – one where a horse-drawn carriage and whaling boat hang from the ceiling, and another with 44 rooms, 32 stairwells and a rooftop “Room of Winds.” We’ll experience musical tones of Ringing Rocks, sit inside the cockpit of a jet, walk old Indian trails, hold butterflies, explore a river cavern, stand on a lookout over a grand canyon, pass through 14 covered “kissing” bridges, and enjoy the state’s one-of-a-kind wildflower sanctuary. This third volume in the family’s Bucks County Adventures series offers maps, directions, sources for more information and dazzling photography to embroider your own memorable adventures.

The Galloping Ghost

Book Description

Eugene Fluckey was one of the great naval heroes of World War II. His exploits as captain of the submarine USS Barb revolutionized undersea warfare and laid the groundwork for a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine fleet. He retired as a rear admiral and was awarded numerous presidential, congressional, and military honors, including the Medal of Honor and four Navy Crosses. In the war against Japan, Fluckey fired the first ballistic missiles from a submarine, sank more tonnage than any other U.S. submarine skipper, including an aircraft carrier, a cruiser, a destroyer, and blew up a train after landing submariners-turned-saboteurs on mainland Japan in 1945. Here is the legendary submariner's story, told with the exclusive access to Fluckey's personal papers and based on interviews with him, his family, Barb shipmates, official Navy documents, and the recollections of his contemporaries.

Pushing the Limits

Book Description

Vice Admiral Allan Rockwell McCann left no reminiscences that might reveal a deeper sense of his extraordinary service, but naval historian Carl LaVO has filled that void by writing this revealing—and often inspiring—biography. Among McCann’s many accomplishments: Served as liaison officer for the modification of the antiquated O-12 submarine into the privately-leased Nautilus that made the first attempt to sail beneath the Arctic ice shelf in 1931; pioneered the McCann Submarine Rescue Chamber; directed fire from the sub tender Pelias at Japanese aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor; commanded the battleship Iowa during the Battle of Leyte Gulf; was Chief of Staff of the Navy’s 10th Fleet that stymied a last ditch effort to attack North America via U-boats; headed the Navy task force that transported President Truman to the Potsdam conference; and as ComSubPac was aboard the first submarine to navigate under the polar ice in 1947. This book is an overdue appreciation of a significant admiral who has been all but ignored in naval history.

When Nick Young and Stephanie Harold are offered a monthly stipend and a year-long stay in a magnificent house on a country estate in the farmland of Bucks County, it is an offer they can’t refuse. A well-stocked wine cellar, a beautiful pool, luxury amenities, and one of the finest art collections in the country are theirs for the time, as long as they agree that one person will always be present in the house. Dismissing the request as upper-class paranoia, Nick and Stephanie find themselves living in a museum-like estate. But as they learn more about the sculptures and paintings that surround them, they become frightened and annoyed at the power the objects have over them. When Nick discovers evidence of a prowler, he begins to monitor the property nightly, developing an obsession to catch the intruder fueled by an urge to prove himself as Stephanie’s protector. Drawn deeper into the intriguing mystery of the house and its priceless art, Stephanie and Nick see aspects of each other that they had never seen before, finding themselves in a nightmarish test of their wits and stamina that threatens not only their relationship but also their lives.

The Doan Gang

Book Description

Contrary to popular perception, the American Revolution was not a unanimously patriotic fight against British oppressors, but a bitter civil war, in which nearly half the population opposed the movement for independence. Loyalty to the British Crown took many forms, but no story better represents this conflict than that of the Doan Gang, a loose confederacy of men from various states who robbed tax collectors, militia payrolls, and county treasuries, and threatened to kidnap state officials. In The Doan Gang: The Remarkable History of America's Most Notorious Loyalist Outlaws, Terry A. McNealy uses primary sources to cut through the fictional accounts and present an even more compelling history of this extraordinary story from the American Revolution.

Slade Cutter, Submarine Warrior

Book Description

"Slade Cutter's heroic feats as an athlete and World War II submarine commander left an indelible mark on the U.S. Navy. From a humble upbringing on a depression-era farm in Illinois, he won an appointment to the Naval Academy and went on to become one of America's most formidable and decorated naval officers in World War II. As commander of the USS Seahorse, he sank twenty-three enemy ships in the Pacific, earning four Navy Crosses and a Presidential Unit Citation. Although Cutter's brilliant tactics and unusual exploits are the stuff of legend, this is the first biography published about him. With complete and exclusive access to his subject, journalist Carl LaVO presents a remarkably candid portrait of the storied captain. He draws on countless interviews with Cutter and with many of his shipmates and admirers - as well as a few detractors. Cutter's own views about his naval career and the inner workings of the Navy's hierarchy are always forthright and contribute uniquely to the official record."--BOOK JACKET.

The Femme Fatale Hypothesis

Book Description

More accurately a love triptych than triangle, The Femme Fatale Hypothesis is the story of one spring in 2015 when three people form intimate bonds forged in the fires of their respective tribulations. As Rose Geddes's lung cancer progresses toward its inexorable end and her husband's ability to care for her diminishes, their widowed neighbor, June Danhill, stumbles into the middle of their intersecting crises. June's only son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren have recently moved to the West Coast. She embraces the opportunity to distract herself from her loneliness by helping to care for the Geddeses. But it isn't long before June realizes that Rose wants more from her than she is willing to give. Love and loss, family secrets, visiting vultures, the Memorial Park boys, a long-forgotten keepsake, morphine versus fentanyl, and the sexual cannibalism of the false garden mantid all fuel this psychological thriller that tests the thin line between mercy and murder.
