iGuzzini: Barcelona Corporate Building

Book Description

Light and architecture lie at the base of the iGuzzini Illuminazione strategy. During the day, a "natural" organic form creates high-quality and highly-ergonomic workplaces. At night, the building is transformed by artifical light into a glowing landmark in the landscape, a gigantic lantern. The project is the result of profound technological research, that runs parallel to the building?s use: an R&D centre for the development of technical knowledge and expertise in lighting systems. This publication collects all aspects of this building: from the competition phase to the opening ceremony every step is described: structure, sustainabilty aspects, skin, lighting... Exceptional photographs by Jordi Bernado and Adria Goula round up this volume.

Guastavino Vaulting

Book Description

The first monograph to celebrate the architectural legacy of the Guastavino family is now available in paperback. First-generation Spanish immigrants Rafael Guastavino and his son Rafael Jr. oversaw the construction of thousands of spectacular tile vaults across the United States between the 1880s and the 1950s. These versatile, strong, and fireproof vaults were built by Guastavino in more than two hundred major buildings in Manhattan and in hundreds more across the country, including Grand Central Terminal, Carnegie Hall, the Biltmore Estate, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Registry Room at Ellis Island, and many major university buildings. Guastavino Vaulting blends a scholarly history of the technology with archival images, drawings, and stunning photographs that illustrate the variety and endurance of this building method.

An Accidental Masterpiece

Book Description

With the temporary exhibition pavilion of the German Reich at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe designed an architectural icon, but also a controversial monument of the way the Weimar Republic portrayed itself. The building is one of the most unusual success stories in the history of architecture: Despite its short existence, its reputation grew steadily in the following decades, thanks in part to magnificent photographs. It was soon considered the constructed manifesto of the Modern Age, and its spatial and "ideational" ambitions were called "a milestone of Modern architecture." This comprehensively, broadly researched book portrays the building’s complex history and its political entanglement—up to and including its reconstruction according to van der Rohe’s plans at the original site between 1983 and 1986.
