Excerpt from Fennia, 1907-1908, Vol. 24: Bulletin De La Société De Géographie De Finlande Aprés le xvie 5. Le: rois suédois, qui régnérent sur la F ia lande jusqu'en 1809, travaillérent avec energie a la colonisation des régions neutrale, septentrionale et orientale du pays, a l'aide de colons venus des provinces méridionales. La terre n'ayant aucune valeur, ceux qui voulaient pouvaient s'établir dans les régions inhabitées et prendre autant de terre qu'ila le jugeaient necessaire. Et pour trouver des occasions favorables de chaser, de pécher et de défricher par bralic, le pionnier construisait généralement sa maison a des dizaines de km du voisin le plus proche. Ce systeme s'est poursuivi jusqu'ä ces derniers temps, bien que les terres inhabitées aient été depuis declarees propriétés de la couronne. L'etat a continué d'offrir an pionnier a titre gratuit non seulement la terre pour la culture, mais encore des 6tendues assez considérables de forets avec le droit d'ex ploitation.
