The Japanese coloured woodcut print is one of the few art genres from the Far East that is, thanks to Japonisme, familiar and popular in Europe. It is still collected and traded to this day. The Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst in Cologne has trawled through its woodcut repository and viewed its collection of Japanese coloured woodblock prints and books as a whole for the first time. The result is a selection of the most unusual and valuable pieces, which are presented in a special large-scale exhibition and this catalogue. Alongside the primitive, hand-coloured pieces from the end of the 17th century, there are coloured woodblock prints from the worlds of entertainment and the Kabuki theatre ( ukiyo-e ) of the 18th and 19th centuries; depictions of historical warriors and heroes; landscape prints from the famous series by Hokusai and Hiroshige; depictions of flowers, birds, insects and fish; precious privately commissioned calendar prints ( surimono ); quirky depictions of foreigners from Nagasaki; a comprehensive collection of prints from the Meiji period with illustrations of the Sino-Japanese War; and modern Shin-hanga (new woodcut prints) from the Taisho period onwards. A collection of important books complements this broad range of prints, including rare first editions of Hokusai_s manga as well as instructional books for hobby painters, which give an introduction to the stylistic peculiarities of various painting schools. The diversity and the richness of this extensive collection reveals the beauty and importance of the Japanese woodblock print as never before.

This classic guide to Chinese jade is of great interest to art collectors and casual readers alike. First published in 1936 and since then a collector's item of increasing rarity, Chinese Jade Throughout the Ages comprises a review of the characteristics, decorations, folklore, and symbolism of this esteemed mineral that has always held a proud place among gems of the world. The book presents a full descriptive account of the significance and meaning of the carvings produced in this prize stone by Chinese craftsmen from the earliest times, through the Chou and succeeding dynasties, down to the twentieth century. The text is illustrated with a magnificent series of more than 350 reproductions in color, black and white, and line drawings of choice pieces selected from the chief Asian, European, and American collections. In addition the Chinese art history book explains no only the wealth of symbolic designs used in the decoration of jade but also a large number of the marks and devices by which collectors identify the origin and the date of valued pieces.

This catalogue assembles sumptuous photographs of the world's leading collection of Cham sculpture, along with the most recent insights of Vietnamese and international scholars. The Champa culture thrived in magnificent temples, sculpture, dance and music along the central and southern coast of today's Vietnam from the 5th to the 15th centuries. A focused exploration here uncovers this brilliant yet almost lost culture to newcomers as well as experts. To mark its centenary, the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture has been expanded and refurbished to appropriately house the world's leading collection of Cham art. The museum staff, supported by the Southeast Asia art programme of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SoaS), London University, funded by the Alphawood Foundation, worked in concert with researchers from around the world to present these masterpieces.
