Descriptive Catalogue of the Manuscripts and Scarce Books in the Library of St. John's College, Cambridge (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Manuscripts and Scarce Books in the Library of St. John's College, Cambridge The age of the mss. I have not attempted to assign, being very far from satisfied of the criteria usually given; at any rate, of my own ability to make use of them. Where any ms. Has an undoubtedly ancient form and appearance, it has been put down, but the majority of those for which no date is assigned, I consider generally to belong to the interval between a.d. 1000 and A.l). 1500: a range wide enough to redeem me from any charge of dogrnatism on the subject. The size is merely a reference to the sizes commonly mentioned in our Booksellers Catalogues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Catalogue of the Collection of Books, Manuscripts, and Works of Art, Belonging to Mr. Henry Probasco, Cincinnati, Ohio (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Collection of Books, Manuscripts, and Works of Art, Belonging to Mr. Henry Probasco, Cincinnati, Ohio Several catalogues being required for special purposes, it was thought desirable to print a limited number, the most of which will be given to public and private libraries and bibliophile friends. The present collection was accumulated during years which were devoted mainly to the duties of an extensive business. With scant time for needful studies, limited means for buying, and few opportunities in Cincinnati, until recently, for obtaining bibliographical information, its deficiencies are apparent. Without any pretensions, therefore, to consideration as a Library, which it is not, it may claim the attention of bibliophiles as possessing that peculiar interest which attaches to any valuable collection of books as reflecting in some degree the individuality and personal tastes of its owner. With a desire to add interest to the collection, important additions were made to it during an eighteen months' tour in 1866-67.
