Catalogue of the Geological Museum, Vol. 3 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Geological Museum, Vol. 3 Mr. Carll's eminent success in this branch of the science has been so largely due. When rock specimens and fossils are lost they can almost always be replaced by others identical or very similar; but the time will come when no price or pains will avail to make a collection of under-ground rock specimens such as is here preserved for the instruction of the next generation of geologists. A Catalogue of the Collection of Fossils in the Museum of Practical Geology

Book Description

Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Collection of Fossils in the Museum of Practical Geology: With an Explanatory Introduction Now it is clear that, if the fossils contained in the rocks constituting the surface in every district of Great Britain had been examined, it would be possible, by colouring a map of these islands, in such a manner that all those parts whose fossils indicated their inferiority to the carboniferous formation should be blue, and all those which lay above it should be red, to indicate at once to the miner where his search for coal might possibly be successful, and where it must necessarily fail. And furthermore, if the fossils on which the colouring was based were placed in a Museum for public inspection, it would be Open to every one to examine for himself the evidence on which the map stood, and to satisfy himself of. The accuracy of this part. Of the work of the surveyors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Catalogue of Temporary Museum

Book Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of Temporary Museum: Held at the Geological Society, Burlington House No attempt has been made to classify the descriptions given in the Catalogue, since to have done so would have made it necessary to delay printing until all the manuscript was in hand. The arrangement in the Catalogue is simply according to the order in which the descriptions were received from the several exhibitors. In the Museum itself, classification has been attempted as far as practicable, and letters at the side are given in the Catalogue, which will aid in the finding of Specimens in special groups. This classification is, however, far from complete and if in some instances difficulty should be encountered in identifying specimens, the excuse must be found in the great haste with which the Collection has been got together, and the Catalogue pushed through the press. Not a few valuable specimens and drawings will be found in the Museum, which are not in the Catalogue at all. For these omissions the responsibility rests solely with the exhibitors.
