During the War Between the States, Davidson County, North Carolina, sent nearly 2,000 men into service with the infantry, cavalry, artillery, navy, militia, and home guard. Each of these men left behind home, family, and occupation in order to serve; some would never return; others would return wounded in body and in spirit; 47 served in the Union Army. This is a roster with full biographies of each one of them. (Their lives were far more than just their service records. ) The data were researched for years in four census records (18401870), marriage records, land transfers, cemetery records, family file folders, books, journals, obituaries. Each man's entry includes rank, unit(s), and personal and military history. Birth, death, marriage dates, parents, spouses, children; letters, journals, news articles: all are set forth in each entry, edited only for overall length. Photographs are included for many of the men. Also included is an overview of Davidson County's involvement in the conflict, and a bibliography.

Named for famed Revolutionary war hero General William Lee Davidson, Davidson County enjoys a rich heritage in the heartland of North Carolina's piedmont region, one that combines engaging personalities, charming small towns, a taste for fine barbecue, and world-famous furniture craftsmanship. This volume, with over 200 black-and-white photographs, takes readers on a visual tour of Davidson County over the past two centuries, a time of dramatic change when the county evolved from simple agrarian-based villages into towns swelling with industry. Davidson County allows readers to explore their history as never before, including early scenes of the Court Square, the steadfast facades of the Uptown Lexington Historic District, the famed first "Big Chair" in Thomasville, and a collection of national celebrities that visited different parts of the county--Hop Along Cassidy, Ty Cobb, and Elvis Presley. However, it is not the homes and buildings that make a place special, but its people. This pictorial retrospective features the stories and images of everyday life in the county, showcasing residents in the local classroom, workplace, and "out and about" in the county enjoying its beautiful landscape.

Lexington, North Carolina, heralded as the “Barbecue Capital of the World,” is located in the heart of the Triad, just 30 miles from High Point, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro. Along with barbecue, the town enjoys a rich history in the furniture business and textile industry. Legend claims that the European families who made Lexington their home in the early 1700s named it after a battle of the American Revolution. On April 19, 1775, the brave soldiers of Lexington, Massachusetts, armed themselves and courageously fought the British, losing seven American lives. News of their courage reached North Carolina, and it was decided to name the town in honor of the place where one of the first known British resistances occurred.
