Land O' Lakes, Wisconsin, is surrounded by more freshwater than any small town in America. Originally named State Line because it straddled the border of Wisconsin and upper Michigan, Land O' Lakes quickly became a premier vacation destination because of its wilderness beauty. Resorts built from local timber, like the famous Gateway, attracted celebrities including Dwight Eisenhower and Lawrence Welk. In 1946, Stevens Point-based North Central Airlines inaugurated seasonal flights to Land O' Lakes, complementing railroad service by the Chicago and North Western Railway. The word had spread: for the best north woods entertainment, recreation, and beauty, head to Land O' Lakes, "at the top of Wisconsin." This book features the best images available from the Land O' Lakes Historical Society to depict the region's early pioneers, resorts, and businesses.

The classic chronicle of life and self-reliance in the great Northern Forest, reissued for its many fans “Cache Lake Country is a gem for many reasons—a simple narrative, the ways in which it conveys the work-a-day joys and exertions of life in the wilderness, the woodscraft techniques it illustrates, and the slow and pleasurable way in which the soul of a serene man is revealed.” —The New York Times Over half a century ago, John Rowlands set out by canoe into the wilds of Canada to survey land for a timber company. After paddling alone for several days, he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams," which he named Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer?timber for a cabin; fish, game, and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without. This is his story, containing both folklore and philosophy, with wisdom about the woods and the demand therein for inventiveness. It includes directions for making moccasins, stoves, shelters, outdoor ovens, canoes, and hundreds of other ingenious and useful gadgets.

Antioch is a unique small town at the border between Illinois and Wisconsin. Its rich history and strong family values have supported the village since the first families arrived in the early 1800s. In 1983, a group of dedicated people decided the history of Antioch was slipping away and started the Lakes Region Historical Society. Since that time the community has responded with thousands of artifacts and pictures of early Antioch. From the humble beginnings in log cabins along the shores of Loon Lake to the active community of today, the pictures lead one back in time. Antioch blossomed during the 1890s and early 1900s when the Chicago area discovered the beauty of the lakes in the region. Resorts opened everywhere, almost overnight it seemed, and crowds flooded the area. Most came on the train; others came in the new horseless carriages. The village of Antioch expands way beyond its legal limits. The surrounding area depends on the village for much of its needs. The lakes still thrive today because of the workings of the little town. Although the population is only in the thousands, the unincorporated area swells that number to double its size.
