In this new 264-page book, 68 pages of which are in full color, author John Kelly explores the fascinating history of the city's railroads, starting with the Milwaukee & Waukesha in 1847. By 1873 the Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway--later the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific ("The Milwaukee Road") opened a line to Chicago and the railroad was on its way. The Milwaukee Shops and the Hiawatha legend, Skytops and Super Domes, and the story behind designer Brooks Stevens, are also featured. Kelly supplies copious data on not only the Milwaukee Road, but also the Chicago & NorthWestern's freight and passenger service, including the 400 fleet. Kelly also writes about the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, America's Fastest Interurban, the Skokie Valley Route and Electroliners. In the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company section, he reviews streetcars, interurbans and trackless trolley buses. With the inclusion of the Lake Boats, the Pere Marquette, Chesapeake & Ohio, and Grand Trunk Western RR's also come into the picture. In addition the book covers the Beer Line and the breweries, Milwaukee's meatpacking industry, Milwaukee's railroad stations and freight yards--a recipe for some great railroad reading. Generously illustrated with 135 color and 362 black and white photos, maps and drawings, this limited edition volume will be available in hardcover and is a treasured keepsake for your library.

When talk began circulating in 1848 about the importance of railroads, the people of Cascade grew anxious. Without direct access to navigable rivers other than the Mississippi over 36 miles away, their community could very well fade from existence. They needed a railroad as soon as possible. The idea raced forward, with the backing of the Chicago, Clinton, Dubuque and Minnesota Railroad Company, or "the River Road," which ran along the western bank of the Mississippi River and passed through Bellevue. Their hopes and dreams became reality in a three-foot-gauge line 31 years later, in 1879. In 1880, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway purchased the River Road, which included the narrow-gauge branch line to Cascade. Overjoyed at having a larger entity involved, anticipation for the widening of the rails to standard gauge grew quickly. This book relates the story from the beginning to its abandonment in 1936. Today Bellevue and Cascade survive as thriving small towns and are economically healthy. Despite the fact that 70 years have passed since the last spike was pulled, many people know of and recall Iowa's last narrow-gauge railroad.

Art Peterson is back with more color images from his Krambles-Peterson Archive. This book focuses on freight railroading and features scenes of switching and trains in industrial areas in the Transition and Classic eras. Large photos and in depth captions go beyond just telling what's in the photo - they put the images in context with the greater railroad scene as well as what was going on in the larger society.
