Reflections in the Mirror is Gary Bateman’s second book of poetry. This marvelously conceived and captivating new book is a literary collection of selected poetry spanning the years of 2014 to 2019. In this book, Mr. Bateman presents to the reader a very interesting and an eclectic selection of diverse types of poetry and themes. His literary focus and approach are designed to highlight the importance and relevance of poetry in today’s world, and to give the reader a true feeling for and an appreciation of the sense of enchantment and fascination that poetry engenders as the reader is exposed to a vast spectrum of ideas, concepts, fantasy, myths, and realities. Mr. Bateman believes in the dynamic nature and symbolic power of poetry to capture the imagination, emotions, and passions of the reader as he or she enters into a reflective state of thought, a heightened sense of intellectual curiosity, and a deeper realization of the complexities and challenges facing the mortal world of mankind, and what lies beyond mankind’s mortal reach in the greater cosmic world of the spiritual and the unknown.

This study examines tales from The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) and from The Lais by the French poet Marie de France (fl. mid-to late twelfth century) to explore a paradox: how can a vibrant, complex, and timeless vision be conveyed in convention-informed and time-bound language? Marie plays against Ovid’s tales to probe the dilemma, thereby echoing Ovid who does the same to the canonical literary monuments of his day. Both poets suggest that poetry can avoid the flattening effect of monumental canonizing not only by the creative use of literary echoes, but also by shifting perspectives on the conventional, which in turn, can encourage readers to see reflections of many stories in any given tale. Ovid and Marie suggest and encourage in this manner by presenting literary love’s topoi and traditional lovers from a variety of metaliterary perspectives, thereby eliciting active readerly memory as well as providing the opportunity to see the conventional afresh, activity that allows even canonical texts to become living memorials.

The second volume in a historic six-volume series containing many of the first English translations of the classic mahamudra literature compiled by the Seventh Karmapa. Sounds of Innate Freedom: The Indian Texts of Mahamudra are historic volumes containing many of the first English translations of the classic mahamudra literature. The texts and songs in these volumes constitute the large compendium called The Indian Texts of the Mahamudra of Definitive Meaning, compiled by the Seventh Karmapa Chötra Gyatso (1456–1539). Translated, introduced, and annotated by Karl Brunnhölzl, acclaimed senior teacher at the Nalandabodhi community of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, the collection offers a brilliant window into the richness of the vast ocean of Indian mahamudra texts cherished in all Tibetan lineages, particularly in the Kagyü tradition, giving us a clear view of the sources of one of the world’s great contemplative traditions. This volume 2 (thirty-four texts) contains two long-established sets of Mahamudra works: “The Sixfold Pith Cycle” and short texts of Maitripa’s “Twenty-Five Dharmas of Mental Nonengagement,” which present a blend of Madhyamaka, Mahamudra, and certain tantric principles, as well as two commentaries by Maitripa’s students. The vital focus of this volume is the accomplishment of true reality.
