Located in North Carolina's rolling piedmont, Cleveland County was formed from portions of Lincoln and Rutherford Counties in 1841. Since the county's days as the leading cotton producer in western North Carolina, residents have gently changed their ways of life. Both agriculture and textiles are retreating into the distant past, but the impact both have had on Cleveland's towns and residents is not to be forgotten. This volume, the second in the Images of America series about the area, includes vintage photographs and postcards from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, beginning with an 1879 snapshot of an early educators' gathering. Prominent families who guided the county on its course make appearances, including Governor O. Max Gardner and his wife, Faye Webb Gardner; the W.J. Arey family, operators of the oldest family business in the county; and the O.Z. Morgan family, pioneers in the development of agriculture extension in North Carolina. Leaders of Cleveland's textile industry are also highlighted, including the families of John R. Dover of Shelby and C.E. Neisler of Kings Mountain.

In North Carolina's proprietary period (1663-1729), the primary means of acquiring land was by headright. A free person was allowed to claim a specified amount of land for each person, including himself/herself, that he/she transported into the colony for the purpose of settlement. While the amount of land attached to a headright varied throughout the era, the most common amount was fifty acres.

While tracing the important developments in industrial architecture over a one-hundred-year period, she demonstrates that as the United States became an industrialized nation, the goals pursued in industrial architecture remained straightforward and constant even as the means to achieve them changed.

LEGACY IN WORDS I ponder what I can leave My children when I m gone, For I don t have a lot of money, Nor a great big fancy home. They will have some memories But those will surely fade. What tangible thing can I leave, To remind them of my place. I put some words together Some of them even rhyme They tell of my inner most thoughts And things going on at that time. When the children read this book Of poetry they will see My legacy in words A gift to them from me. Hopefully it will encourage them When they are feeling down, And they can feel my presence When I m no longer around."
