The Cocaine War

Book Description

The Cocaine War uncovers the geopolitical interests behind the US "War on Drugs" in Latin America, and spells out just what the drug war means: the danger it poses to the political stability of weak democracies, human rights and development, and its environmental impact. This book is a rare opportunity for English-speakers to hear the other side of this contentious issue. Boville explores in depth the relationship between the United States and Latin America, explaining the political need of the US government to develop a useful tool to extend American authority after the Cold War. Belin Boville is a Spanish journalist working in Latin America.

Coca's Gone

Book Description

In a valley in the eastern foothills of the central Peruvian Andes, a wealth of cocaine once flowed. From the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, this valley experienced abrupt rises in fortune, reckless corruption, and the brutality of those who sought to impress their own brand of order. When this era of cocaine came to a close, the legacy of its violence continued to mold people's perceptions of time through local storytelling practices. Coca's Gone examines the tense, depressed social terrain of Peru's Upper Huallaga Valley in the wake of a twenty-year cocaine boom. This compelling book conveys stories of the lived reality of jolted social worlds and weaves a fascinating meditation on the complex interrelationships between violence, law, and time.

Coca, Cocaine, and the Bolivian Reality

Book Description

This volume examines the impact of coca and the cocaine trade on Bolivia, the poorest and most vulnerable of the South American countries. Topics examined include coca growers who have organized to protect their livelihood; coca substitution programs that have provided no viable alternative; and the repressive legal and extralegal apparatus which has been mobilized against the growers. Surprising studies show how coca cultivation may be environmentally conservative and how it can underwrite traditional culture. At the same time, both politically and economically, Bolivian society has been transformed by coca and the cocaine trade and efforts to combat them. These efforts, concentrating on supply-side interdiction and coca eradication, have had negative impacts within Bolivia, have damaged the relationship between Bolivia and the United States, and have been ineffective in stemming the flow of cocaine to consuming countries.
