The Burlington Fine Arts Club was founded in London in 1866 as a gentlemen’s club with a singular remit – to exhibit members’ art collections. Exhibitions were proposed, organized, and furnished by a group of prominent members of British society who included aristocrats, artists, bankers, politicians, and museum curators. Exhibitions at their grand house in Mayfair brought many private collections and collectors to light, using members’ social connections to draw upon the finest and most diverse objects available. Through their unique mode of presentation, which brought museum-style display and interpretation to a grand domestic-style gallery space, they also brought two forms of curatorial and art historical practice together in one unusual setting, enabling an unrestricted form of connoisseurship, where new categories of art were defined and old ones expanded. The history of this remarkable group of people has yet to be presented and is explored here for the first time. Through a framework of exhibition themes ranging from Florentine painting to Ancient Egyptian art, a study of lenders, objects, and their interpretation paints a picture of private collecting activities, connoisseurship, and art world practice that is surprisingly diverse and interconnected.

Dva svazky přinášejí vědecké vydání děl Edwarda Perryho Warrena (z nichž žádné, s výjimkou jediného, dosud nebylo nově publikováno), doplněné o úvodní životopisné údaje, rozsáhlý poznámkový aparát, překlady, ilustrace a přílohy. Poprvé zde může čtenář slyšet Warrenův hlas v jeho plné šíři – v jeho korespondenci a dalších textech, které tvoří jeho biografii nazvanou Edward Perry Warren: The Biography of a Connoisseur, v jeho konverzaci, zachycené v díle An Imaginary Conversation Osberta Burdetta, v jeho románu A Tale of Pausanian Love (který je zde vydán vůbec poprvé), v jeho sbírce The Wild Rose: A Volume of Poems, v jeho pohádce The Prince Who Did Not Exist, v jeho odborném článku The Scandal of the Museo di Villa Giulia, v jeho pamfletu Classical & American Education, v jeho převyprávění tří řeckých legend Alcmaeon, Hypermestra, Caeneus a konečně v jeho vrcholném díle, apologii A Defence of Uranian Love.

"The catalogue ... is truly excellent and makes an important contribution to the study of Greek Art." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review "An overwhelming volume. The subject matter ... is described in great detail in nine chapters. Essential." --Choice This catalogue documents a major exhibition at the Getty Villa that was the first ever to focus on ancient Athenian terracotta vases made by techniques other than the well-known black- and red-figure styles. The exhibition comprised vases executed in bilingual, coral-red gloss, outline, Kerch-style, white ground, and Six's technique, as well as examples with added clay and gilding, and plastic vases and additions. The Colors of Clay opens with an introductory essay that integrates the diverse themes of the exhibition and sets them within the context of vase making in general; a second essay discusses conservation issues related to several of the techniques. A detailed discussion of the techniques featured in the exhibition precedes each section of the catalogue. More than a hundred vases from museums in the United States and Europe are described in depth.
