A Future without Borders? Theories and practices of cosmopolitan peacebuilding

A Future without Borders (FWB) offers an explanation of why the recent, but by now distant, movements of the “Occupy Wall Street” activists have repeated themselves across the globe. The book demonstrates some of the processes inherent to an adapting cosmopolitanism (a call for civility, a call for Justice, a call for a collective responsibility or accountability) that is not individualistic in nature. Until recently, the statal/national problems understood as politico-economic failures were conceived as isolated problems, failures of statal institutions that are particular to certain countries. FWB contests the Westphalian logic that explains these circumstances, as national failures and argues instead that the conditions be assessed as extensions of the global economic and ideological failures that they surely are. Feminism after 9/11


Book Description

This book is about social phenomena that directly acknowledge the structures and ideologies emerging after September 11, 2001. It considers how these structures and ideologies manage, control, and contain specific bodies with respect to race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and citizenship status. Inflections presented via “9/11” come into play against a backdrop shaped by established patterns of behavior and attitudes toward women and particular groups of people within an American landscape. As a result, existing notions of threat combine with 9/11 inflections to shape a specific conception of threat in a context “after” 9/11, and within this context, a feminism “after” 9/11 emerges. This contextualized feminism would have to develop its analysis within the frame of a society fundamentally altered by the events of 9/11, including its ideological aftermath, by foregrounding pertinent social categories as they interplay with women’s bodies.

Teaching with Tension is a collection of seventeen original essays that address the extent to which attitudes about race, impacted by the current political moment in the United States, have produced pedagogical challenges for professors in the humanities. As a flashpoint, this current political moment is defined by the visibility of the country's first black president, the election of his successor, whose presidency has been associated with an increased visibility of the alt-right, and the emergence of the neoliberal university. Together these social currents shape the tensions with which we teach. Drawing together personal reflection, pedagogical strategies, and critical theory, Teaching with Tension offers concrete examinations that will foster student learning. The essays are organized into three thematic sections: "Teaching in Times and Places of Struggle" examines the dynamics of teaching race during the current moment, marked by neoconservative politics and twenty-first century freedom struggles. "Teaching in the Neoliberal University" focuses on how pressures and exigencies of neoliberalism (such as individualism, customer-service models of education, and online courses) impact the way in which race is taught and conceptualized in college classes.
