COVID-19 Lockdown

Book Description

Is this really happening? I watch in almost disbelief that all schools and businesses are closed across the country. I watch on TV, read online and hear what reporters, politicians, governmental officials and many in the medical community are saying and it just does not add up. The information I am hearing in the media does not correlate well with what I see and what I hear from many physician colleagues across the country. I understand that COVID-19 can be bad but as a doctor, I question is this much fear and panic warranted? What is the risk to me, you or our families? Is this virus as bad as many report? Do masks protect us and if so, which are better? How can we protect ourselves? I just cannot help but get a funny feeling that something is not right. Am I missing something? Is the public not being told something? Is there some other or ulterior motive for all of this? How can the predictions be so off? How many people have really died? How are the number of deaths calculated? Why can't we get answers? I realized there are many questions and no one seems to really have answers. I get the feeling I am in a bad dream or an episode of the Twilight zone. I decided to do what I normally do when things don't add up or are confusing, I did research. I investigated for myself and instead of trusting opinions, I trusted data. After doing extensive reading, discussing with many colleagues and professionals, and much analysis, I discovered that there is a lot of information that many do not know. If they did, perhaps people would not be as fearful or as panicked. People may be surprised, even shocked to learn how the number of deaths are "calculated" as opposed to actually being counted. People will be surprised about testing. The types, number of tests and the inaccuracy of many of them. When you read about the consequences of the lockdown, you will realize that the lockdown has significant consequences well beyond ruining the economy. The shutdown may ultimately cause more deaths than the virus itself. When I set off to research this important topic, I was in search of the truth, whatever it may be. The pandemic and decisions that must be made are complicated. Anyone who says otherwise probably does not have a grasp of the complexity of the matter. But, once you read Part 1 and Part 2 of the series, you will gain information and facts that will reinforce what you believe, make you think differently, better understand the issues and hopefully gain more perspective on the matter. You will see the answers to these questions and many more: 1) What is the Coronavirus and where did it really come from? 2) What is the difference between the Coronavirus and COVID-19? Very important difference 3) How many people have caught or tested positive for coronavirus? 4) How many people have died from COVID-19? How is this number calculated? 5) What types of tests are there for Coronavirus? How accurate are they? 6) Why were the predictions so wrong? 7) What are the consequences of the lockdown? Deaths? Financial? Suffering? 8) What "mistakes" may have been made? 9) How can we be better prepared in the future or prevent a similar pandemic in the future? After reading this series of books, you will likely know more than many politicians, government officials and reporters on TV. I encourage you to read this, learn the information and then reach your own conclusions. Don't be AFRAID or PANIC...Be INFORMED!

Pandemic Response and the Cost of Lockdowns

Book Description

Pandemic Response and the Cost of Lockdowns brings the vast analytical apparatus of the humanities and social sciences to the task of critically analysing the political decisions taken in 2020–21. The global response to the COVID-19 pandemic left little time for critical debate about the impact of lockdowns. Across the world, governments claimed to "follow the science", but they rarely paid attention to the humanities and social sciences. Indeed, the absence of these perspectives is symptomatic of a longer-term trend in the marginalisation of the humanities and social sciences in policymaking and public debate. This book exposes the tragic consequences of this omission in 2020–21 and demonstrates the potential for a different path in the future – a path in which we pay attention to power, complexity, and our biases. The authors establish what these disciplines have to offer in a global emergency and how we can ensure they help us avoid the mistakes of 2020–21 in the future. This original and interdisciplinary book will be of great interest to students, scholars, and researchers throughout the humanities and social sciences, including the fields of philosophy, sociology, anthropology, law, political science, and history, as well as relevant policymakers.

Lockdown: 100 Days in San Francisco Facing COVID-19, Protests, and an Uncertain Future

Book Description

On March 16th, 2020, San Francisco announced that it would be instituting a Shelter-In-Place to help combat the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first major metropolitan area in California and the United States to enact such an action. Yet, throughout those first 100 days, Conor Mitchell, a photographer and videographer living in downtown San Francisco, found himself alone in the city he had called home for just 18 months. Taking as many pictures as he could, Conor curated a collection of photos in this book to best illustrate what a total lockdown in one of the most famous cities in the world looked like. But the street would not stay quiet for long. Aside from the pandemic itself, San Francisco was one of many cities that hosted a string of protests that swept through the country fueled by the death of George Floyd. As a result, the city saw empty city streets become filled with protestors and even scenes of civil unrest. It felt as though the entire country was beginning to pull itself apart. All of these photos present how uncertain things were for San Francisco at the time, but they also paint a picture of how uncertain the city's future could be as well. Wherever we may be in history relative to the pandemic and protests, Conor hopes these photos will act as a force for change. He hopes that some action will result in a better future for us after dealing with this pandemic, a summer of revolutionary protests, and what feels to be a lifetime of uncertainty.

The COVID-19 Crisis

Book Description

Since its emergence in early 2020, the COVID-19 crisis has affected every part of the world. Well beyond its health effects, the pandemic has wrought major changes in people’s everyday lives as they confront restrictions imposed by physical distancing and consequences such as loss of work, working or learning from home and reduced contact with family and friends. This edited collection covers a diverse range of experiences, practices and representations across international contexts and cultures (UK, Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand). Together, these contributions offer a rich account of COVID society. They provide snapshots of what life was like for people in a variety of situations and locations living through the first months of the novel coronavirus crisis, including discussion not only of health-related experiences but also the impact on family, work, social life and leisure activities. The socio-material dimensions of quotidian practices are highlighted: death rituals, dating apps, online musical performances, fitness and exercise practices, the role of windows, healthcare work, parenting children learning at home, moving in public space as a blind person and many more diverse topics are explored. In doing so, the authors surface the feelings of strangeness and challenges to norms of practice that were part of many people’s experiences, highlighting the profound affective responses that accompanied the disruption to usual cultural forms of sociality and ritual in the wake of the COVID outbreak and restrictions on movement. The authors show how social relationships and social institutions were suspended, re-invented or transformed while social differences were brought to the fore. At the macro level, the book includes localised and comparative analyses of political, health system and policy responses to the pandemic, and highlights the differences in representations and experiences of very different social groups, including people with disabilities, LGBTQI people, Dutch Muslim parents, healthcare workers in France and Australia, young adults living in northern Italy, performing artists and their audiences, exercisers in Australia and New Zealand, the Latin cultures of Spain and Italy, Asian-Americans and older people in Australia. This volume will appeal to undergraduates and postgraduates in sociology, cultural and media studies, medical humanities, anthropology, political science and cultural geography.

The Wuhan Lockdown

Book Description

A metropolis with a population of about 11 million, Wuhan sits at the crossroads of China. It was here that in the last days of 2019, the first reports of a mysterious new form of pneumonia emerged. Before long, an abrupt and unprecedented lockdown was declared—the first of many such responses to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. This book tells the dramatic story of the Wuhan lockdown in the voices of the city’s own people. Using a vast archive of more than 6,000 diaries, the sociologist Guobin Yang vividly depicts how the city coped during the crisis. He analyzes how the state managed—or mismanaged—the lockdown and explores how Wuhan’s residents responded by taking on increasingly active roles. Yang demonstrates that citizen engagement—whether public action or the civic inaction of staying at home—was essential in the effort to fight the pandemic. The book features compelling stories of citizens and civic groups in their struggle against COVID-19: physicians, patients, volunteers, government officials, feminist organizers, social media commentators, and even aunties loudly swearing at party officials. These snapshots from the lockdown capture China at a critical moment, revealing the intricacies of politics, citizenship, morality, community, and digital technology. Presenting the extraordinary experiences of ordinary people, The Wuhan Lockdown is an unparalleled account of the first moments of the crisis that would define the age.
