Cosmopolitanism and Zionism (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Cosmopolitanism and Zionism The union of a sane universalism with a sane patriotism is not often achieved, because on the one hand we have the so-called intellectuals, who would boil down all the nations, strain ofi their local peculiarities, and retain the pure tea of the enlightened international, or rather cosmopolitan, man; on the other hand, we have the Violent jingoes, who would save the world by con quering it and impose on it the government of the one nation they hold to be really able to educate and develop the other races that one nation being, of course, their own. We have to defend ourselves against both the cosmopolitan and the jingo. People imagine a cosmopolitan man who does not exist. They talk of intellectuals being the same in all countries. So they would be if there were any pure intellectuals or brains walking, but there are not; all those called intellectuals retain some national prejudice and some peculiarities of race temperament they may not know this, but it is so. The ideal intellectual man, or the ideal capitalist, is a mere diagrammatic man. If you could enter a world where all men were moved by one motive - desire for impersonal knowledge or acquisition of wealth or dominion, there would be no nationality. All men would be the same. Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora The special place which the land of Israel occupied in the spiritual as well as in their national life was, of course, part of that religious discipline which, like the people, was intended to serve a higher purpose. But it is only necessary to refer to the great Prophets of Israel, who proclaimed the universality of His sway, to realise that the land of Israel was indeed regarded as a priceless possession. It was not only, in the words of Deuteronomy, a land which the Lord thy God careth for always are the eyes of the Lord thy God upon it (deut. Xi., or in the appeal of the psalmist, For thy servants take pleasure in her stones and favour the dust thereo (ps. Cii., but it is out of Zion that the Law shall go forth to the nations of the earth. The second Isaiah, the. Most universalistic of the Prophets, hailed also in most exalted strain the triumphant return of the exiled people to its own land. Lilienbloom the Zionist (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lilienbloom the Zionist Yes, we are sincerely bound in gratitude to give credit to all harbingers and torch-bearers a'nd champions of civilisation; but in one respect Gordon was greatly mistaken. Moses Mendelssohn, the precursor of the J awish renaissance in Germany, made the sanie mistake. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A History of the Jews (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A History of the Jews "Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations: Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thine elders, and they will tell thee." Deut. xxxii.7. "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen." - Isaiah xliii. 10. "The life of man is numbered by days: The days of Israel are without number." Ecclus. xxxvii. 25. "Kingdoms arise and kingdoms pass away, but Israel endureth for evermore." - Midrash. "Man is made man by history. The Jew recognizes that he is made what he is by the history of his fathers, and feels he is losing his better self so far as he loses his hold on his past history. "The history of Israel is the great living proof of the working of Divine Providence in the affairs of the world. Alone among the nations Israel has shared in all great movements since mankind became conscious of their destinies. If there is no Divine purpose in the long travail of Israel, it is vain to seek for any such purpose in man's life. In the reflected light of that purpose each Jew should lead his life with an added dignity." - Joseph Jacobs. Parting Ways

Book Description

Judith Butler follows Edward Said’s late suggestion that through a consideration of Palestinian dispossession in relation to Jewish diasporic traditions a new ethos can be forged for a one-state solution. Butler engages Jewish philosophical positions to articulate a critique of political Zionism and its practices of illegitimate state violence, nationalism, and state-sponsored racism. At the same time, she moves beyond communitarian frameworks, including Jewish ones, that fail to arrive at a radical democratic notion of political cohabitation. Butler engages thinkers such as Edward Said, Emmanuel Levinas, Hannah Arendt, Primo Levi, Martin Buber, Walter Benjamin, and Mahmoud Darwish as she articulates a new political ethic. In her view, it is as important to dispute Israel’s claim to represent the Jewish people as it is to show that a narrowly Jewish framework cannot suffice as a basis for an ultimate critique of Zionism. She promotes an ethical position in which the obligations of cohabitation do not derive from cultural sameness but from the unchosen character of social plurality. Recovering the arguments of Jewish thinkers who offered criticisms of Zionism or whose work could be used for such a purpose, Butler disputes the specific charge of anti-Semitic self-hatred often leveled against Jewish critiques of Israel. Her political ethic relies on a vision of cohabitation that thinks anew about binationalism and exposes the limits of a communitarian framework to overcome the colonial legacy of Zionism. Her own engagements with Edward Said and Mahmoud Darwish form an important point of departure and conclusion for her engagement with some key forms of thought derived in part from Jewish resources, but always in relation to the non-Jew. Butler considers the rights of the dispossessed, the necessity of plural cohabitation, and the dangers of arbitrary state violence, showing how they can be extended to a critique of Zionism, even when that is not their explicit aim. She revisits and affirms Edward Said’s late proposals for a one-state solution within the ethos of binationalism. Butler’s startling suggestion: Jewish ethics not only demand a critique of Zionism, but must transcend its exclusive Jewishness in order to realize the ethical and political ideals of living together in radical democracy.

Ten Years of Zionism

Book Description

Excerpt from Ten Years of Zionism: A Pamphlet Much more, however, than by the Colonisation Societies was the settlement in Palestine furthered by Baron Edmund de Roth schild of Paris. Most of his Colonies were later transferred to the formal administration of the Jewish Colonisation Association (i. C. A.) which in 1896 also drew Palestine into the sphere of its operations. But in spite of the colossal' sums spent on the fifteen established colonies, their 'success at first did not come up to expectations. Only lately is a pleasing change to be noticed in their condition. The difficult situation in which the colonies at that time found themselves finally led to general discourage ment, and the Colonisation Movement stagnated.
