This book examines positions that challenge the Fregean logic-first view. It raises critical questions about logic by examining various ways in which logic may be entangled with mathematics and metaphysics. Is logic topic-neutral and general? Can we take the application of logic for granted? This book suggests that we should not be dogmatic about logic but ask similar critical questions about logic as those Kant raised about metaphysics and mathematics. It challenges the Fregean logic-first view according to which logic is fundamental and hence independent of any extra-logical considerations. Whereas Quine assimilated logic and mathematics to the theoretical parts of empirical science, the present volume explores views that stop short of his thoroughgoing holism but instead take logic to be answerable to or entangled with some particular disciplines. The contributions provide views that assign primacy to mathematical reasons, Kantian metaphysical grounds, Husserlian transcendental phenomenological reflection, or normative considerations about how terms ought to be defined in various fields of empirical science or mathematics. Space is thereby carved out between a Fregean position on the one hand and Quinean holism on the other. Critical Views of Logic will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of philosophy, linguistics, mathematics, and computer science, as well as those engaged in various fields of empirical science. The chapters in this book, except for chapter 4, were originally published in the journal Inquiry.

"Collage is neither genre or art movement, yet it has had a profound impact upon art of the twentieth century. Far more than Picasso's pasted papers or the layering of images upon images, collage challenges concepts of realism, abstraction, time, dimension, and perspective. As a means of artistic expression it has persisted and expanded to incorporate the increasing sophistication and complexity of image production. The representation of images simultaneously from multiple angles--experimentations out of which collage developed in the early part of our century--takes on increasingly deeper meanings when applied to literature, cinema, photography, music, and video art--all beneficiaries of collage. In Collage: Critical Views art historian Katherine Hoffman has assembled a rich 'collage' of perspectives on the art form. Classic articles by noted art historians and critics including Clement Greenberg, Donald Kuspit, Harold Rosenberg, and Robert Rosenblum are juxtaposed with more recent contributions by Patricia Leighten, Charlotte Stokes, Annegreth Nill, and Gregory Ulmer as well as with articles published here for the first time by such artists as Miriam Schapiro, Richard Newman, and Paul Vangelisti to suggest the range of impact collage has had on twentieth-century artistic expression. With an introductory overview and notes preceding each chapter, Hoffman offers an invaluable collection to scholars, artists, and historians of the twentieth century, unfolding the social, political, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological components and interpretations that make clear collage's pervasive legacy to twentieth-century art." -- Provided by publisher

This book is the first edited international volume focused on critical perspectives on plurilingualism in deaf education, which encompasses education in and out of schools and across the lifespan. The book provides a critical overview and snapshot of the use of sign languages in education for deaf children today and explores contemporary issues in education for deaf children such as bimodal bilingualism, translanguaging, teacher education, sign language interpreting and parent sign language learning. The research presented in this book marks a significant development in understanding deaf children's language use and provides insights into the flexibility and pragmatism of young deaf people and their families’ communicative practices. It incorporates the views of young deaf people and their parents regarding their language use that are rarely visible in the research to date.

This volume takes a critical look at teaching and learning English across the globe. Its aim is to fill a gap in the literature created by the omission of the voices of those engaged in the everyday practice of teaching and learning English; those of students, teachers, and specialists. Three unique characteristics give this book broad appeal. They include - its inclusion of the perspectives and experiences of students and educators involved in the everyday practice of English language teaching and learning - its inclusion of the experiences of students and educators in both core and non-core English-speaking countries - its basis on original, qualitative studies conducted by scholars in different parts of the world including Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas Of particular interest to applied linguists, scholars from diverse fields such as English as a Foreign/Second Language, English as an International Language, anthropology and education, English education, sociolinguistics, and bilingual education will also find value in this book. Written in accessible language, it can be used in such courses as Applied Linguistics, Second Language Classroom Contexts, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, English Around the World, Research Methodologies in Second Language Acquisition, and Research in Second Language Pedagogical Contexts. In addition, by focusing on presenting research experiences that adopt several epistemological and theoretical approaches, the book provides teachers of research with a great tool to examine varied applications of qualitative methods, data collection, and analytic techniques. Thus it could also be used for courses in Field Research and Qualitative Methods. ENDORSEMENT: “As a scholar and educator who has consistently explored the social implications of the teaching and learning of English, I applaud this book’s concern with documenting the previously unheard voices of language learners and teachers around the world. The book is unique in the manner in which it focuses on the everyday experiences of marginalized English teachers and learners in various contexts around the globe. It also is unique in the manner in which it brings together researchers, teachers and learners to qualitatively investigate a great diversity of local language learning contexts. This book is a must read for anyone concerned with the current spread of English and its implications for individuals not typically foregrounded in language learning and teaching research.” — Dr. Sandra Lee McKay, Professor Emeritus, San Francisco State University, USA
