Devotional Cross-Roads

Book Description

The collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of Christian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, religious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the historian Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.

Angels at the Crossroads

Book Description

The chase was over. In April 1969, nineteen-year-old Jerry Shepherd stares in his rearview mirror at the two policemen approaching his car. He wants to run, make his escape, perhaps his final escape from life. Then he curls his fingers around the small Bible in his back pocket as the words Peace be still whisper through his head. He holds to those words as he steps from the car to handcuffed and arrested. Angels at the Crossroads is the compelling true story of Shepherd's amazing journey from wrongdoing to redemption. Convicted of a crime he can hardly believe he could have committed, Shepherd faces life in prison and fears not only that he won't survive behind bars, but also that he has stepped beyond the hope of prayer or forgiveness. His parents say no as they cover him with fervent prayers, but Shepherd must find his own way through the jungle of prison life to the people - earth angels - who can help him discover God's love knows no limit. On this pilgrimage to self-acceptance, Shepherd learns to forgive the past and completely and unconditionally love again. If you face a crossroads in your life, Shepherd's inspirational journey may help lead you down a new pathway to a life filled with compassion and love. Visit author Ann H. God at the Crossroads

Book Description

Should I send my kids to public school, or homeschool them with my own family's values? Should we attend the church mission trip or take the kids to their soccer tournament? Should I go out with my co-workers after work or go home to make dinner for my husband? Every day our lives are full of choices, from the mundane "what's for dinner" to the more life altering decisions of taking a new job or moving to a new city. Deane Groseclose learned years ago that it's impossible to make these decisions alone. At each crossroads we come to, if we face those decisions with God by our side, we are much better equipped to do what's right for ourselves, our family, and our future. The devotionals published in "God at the Crossroads" reflect Deane's own personal relationship with God, and her need for His instruction and help navigating the choices and struggles of daily life. Through her own study, she hopes to pass on inspiration to others who are yearning for guidance in daily living and especially for a deeper relationship with Christ. This book contains 100 devotionals to help guide you through daily meditation and spiritual practice. They are grouped into three categories, starting with God's Character. Learning about who God is and how He has been a part of human history provides a foundation for our faith. The second part contains devotionals centered around Finding Hope. Even when we might be in a dark time, through scripture and faith in Christ we can find a way to move forward. The third part, Living Fulfilled, contains devotionals that address the issues to arise during daily life and helps the reader find God in all things. Deane Groseclose is a spiritual counselor with Cross-Purpose Ministries, specializing in marriage and family work and personal growth issues. She and husband Tom have 30 years' experience working with couples and individuals in the Winston-Salem, NC area, as well as nationally through virtual technology. Deane ministered eight years on a church staff and has launched marriage and family ministries in two churches. She has served as a board member and spokesperson for the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, with numerous public appearances, including The 700 Club, Golden Eagle Broadcasting (ORU), and the national Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Living at the Crossroads

Book Description

How can Christians live faithfully at the crossroads of the story of Scripture and postmodern culture? In Living at the Crossroads, authors Michael Goheen and Craig Bartholomew explore this question as they provide a general introduction to Christian worldview. Ideal for both students and lay readers, Living at the Crossroads lays out a brief summary of the biblical story and the most fundamental beliefs of Scripture. The book tells the story of Western culture from the classical period to postmodernity. The authors then provide an analysis of how Christians live in the tension that exists at the intersection of the biblical and cultural stories, exploring the important implications in key areas of life, such as education, scholarship, economics, politics, and church.

Eve

Book Description

From the author of the twenty-five-million-copy bestseller The Shack comes a captivating new novel destined to be one of the most talked-about books of the decade. Eve is a bold, unprecedented exploration of the Creation narrative, true to the original texts and centuries of scholarship—yet with breathtaking discoveries that challenge traditional beliefs about who we are and how we’re made. Eve opens a refreshing conversation about the equality of men and women within the context of our beginnings, helping us see each other as our Creator does—complete, unique, and not constrained by cultural rules or limitations. When a shipping container washes ashore on an island between our world and the next, John the Collector finds a young woman inside—broken, frozen, and barely alive. With the aid of Healers and Scholars, John oversees her recovery and soon discovers that her genetic code connects her to every known race. No one would guess what her survival will mean… No one but Eve, Mother of the Living, who calls her “daughter” and invites her to witness the truth about her own story—indeed, the truth about us all. As The Shack awakened readers to a personal, non-religious understanding of God, Eve will free us from faulty interpretations that have corrupted human relationships since the Garden of Eden. Thoroughly researched and exquisitely written, Eve is a masterpiece that will inspire readers for generations to come.
