Current Topics In Physics: In Honor Of Sir Roger J Elliott

Book Description

This indispensable book is a compilation of invited talks delivered at the symposium, “Current Topics in Physics” held in Mexico City in June 2003, to celebrate the 75th birthday of Professor Sir Roger Elliott. The contributions have been prepared by research associates, former students, post-doctoral fellows and colleagues of Professor Elliott, many of them leading scientists — as Sir Roger himself — in important research institutes around the world. The book gives a very timely and comprehensive overview of various key areas of modern condensed matter and statistical physics. 19 original contributions are included, grouped in three main areas: disorder and dynamical systems, structures and glasses, electrical and magnetic properties. The contributions are by many of the foremost researchers in the field of condensed matter and statistical physics. In particular, contributions by such prominent scientists as M E Fisher, A A Maradudin, M F Thorpe, M Balkanski, T Fujiwara, and of course Sir Roger Elliott himself make this book a rewarding read.

Current Topics in Astrofundamental Physics: The Cosmic Microwave Background

Book Description

This NATO Advanced Study Institute provided an up dated understanding, from a fundamental and deep point of view, of the progress and current problems in the early universe, cosmic microwave background radiation, large scale structure, dark matter problem, and the interplay between them. The focus was placed on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Emphasis was given to the mutual impact of fundamental physics and cosmology, both at theoretical and experimental-or observational-levels, within a deep and well defined programme, and a global unifying view, which, in addition, provides of careful inter-disciplinarity. Special Lectures were devoted to neutrinos in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics. In addition, each Course of this series, introduced and promoted topics or subjects, which, although not being of purely astrophysical or cosmological nature, were of relevant physical interest for astrophysics and cosmology. Deep understanding, clarification, synthesis, careful interdisciplinarity within a fundamental physics framework, werethe maingoals ofthe course. Lectures ranged from a motivation and pedagogical introduction for students and participants not directly working in the field to the latest developmentsand most recent results. All Lectures were plenary, had the same duration and were followed by a discussion. The Course brought together experimentalists and theoretical physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers from a variety of backgrounds, including young scientists at post-doctoral level, senior scientists and advanced graduatestudentsas well.

Current Topics in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics

Book Description

Focuses on research in crucial areas such as: cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum information and quantum computation, and techniques for investigating collisions and structure. This work covers topics that includes the multireference coupled cluster method in quantum chemistry and the role of electronic correlation in nanosystems.

Current Topics In Condensed Matter And Particle Physics: Non-perturbative Phenomena And Strongly Correlated Systems

Book Description

This updated edition of the book blends in new e-commerce technologies. Mobile commerce (M-commerce) and use of cloud computing are offering a new set of challenges and opportunities for those individuals who know what they are and how they are related to e-commerce. Their use opens up new markets, expanding the need for larger operations, which in turn requires greater knowledge of the operations management subjects presented in this book. The book is focused on issues, concepts, philosophies, procedures, methodologies, and practices of running e-commerce operations. It connects the basic operations management activities undertaken by every organization (e.g., inventory management, scheduling, etc.) and translates their application into issues and problems faced in the field of e-commerce.The book also provides current research findings, strategies, and practices that can help students in the field of operations management run and improve their e-commerce operations. It covers most of the basic operations management activities and functions and has been designed for an upper-level undergraduate business, a graduate business or engineering management course on e-commerce operations management for university students. Students interested in e-commerce operations will find this book a valuable guide to the important aspects of starting up and running an e-commerce operation. They can learn from reading this book how supply chains, products and processes, human resources and purchasing functions can supported and enhanced by the use of e-commerce. In addition, students can learn how to undertake forecasting and scheduling in e-commerce operations. Decision-makers and managers who have to reengineer e-commerce operations can also use this book as a guide to understanding e-commerce.The Instructor Manual and PowerPoint Slides for the book are available upon request for all instructors who adopt this book as a course text. Current Topics in Elementary Particle Physics

Book Description

This volume contains the contributions to the INTERNATIONAL SUMMER INSTITUTE ON THEORETICAL PHYSICS 1980 held from September 1st to September 12th in Bad Honnef, Germany. This Institute was organized by Wuppertal University. It was the eleventh in a series of Summer Schools on particle physics carried out by German Universities. The Institute was aimed to review the present status of gauge theories in elementary particle physics, with emphasis both on the phenomenological and formal aspects. The first part of the volume covers the recent progress in the development of perturbative methods both in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and flavor dynamics (QFD). Applications to available data from electron positron storage rings and deep inelastic scattering are discussed. The second part presents new results on classical solutions and non-perturbative methods in gauge theories and related field theories like non linear a-models. A very topical account is given on the application of Monte Carlo methods within lattice gauge theories. At present these methods appear to be the most promising technique to establish the quark confinement hypothesis within the framework of non-Abelian gauge theories. The volume is closed with a progress report on the present understanding of sup~rgravity and its relation to grand unification schemes. The lectures on Grand Unified Theories given by Dr. D. V. Nanopoulos at the Bad Honnef meeting can be found in the proceedings of the 1980 Rencontre de Moriond (Ed. J. Tran Thanh Van).

Diverse Topics in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics

Book Description

In this volume, topics are drawn from field theory, especially gauge field theory, as applied to particle, condensed matter and gravitational physics, and concern a variety of interesting subjects. These include geometricalDtopological effects in quantum theory, fractional charge, time travel, relativistic quantized fields in and out of thermal equilibrium and quantum modifications of symmetry in physical systems. Many readers will find this a useful volume, especially theoretical physicists and mathematicians. The material will be of interest to both the expert who will find well-presented novel and stimulating viewpoints of various subjects and the novice who will find complete, detailed and precise descriptions of important topics of current interest, in theoretical and mathematical physics.

Magnetic Electron Lenses

Book Description

No single volume has been entirely devoted to the properties of magnetic lenses, so far as I am aware, although of course all the numerous textbooks on electron optics devote space to them. The absence of such a volume, bringing together in formation about the theory and practical design of these lenses, is surprising, for their introduction some fifty years ago has created an entirely new family of commercial instruments, ranging from the now traditional transmission electron microscope, through the reflection and transmission scanning microscopes, to co lumns for micromachining and microlithography, not to mention the host of experi mental devices not available commercially. It therefore seemed useful to prepare an account of the various aspects of mag netic lens studies. These divide naturally into the five chapters of this book: the theoretical background, in which the optical behaviour is described and formu lae given for the various aberration coefficients; numerical methods for calculat ing the field distribution and trajectory tracing; extensive discussion of the paraxial optical properties and aberration coefficients of practical lenses, il lustrated with curves from which numerical information can be obtained; a comple mentary account of the practical, engineering aspects of lens design, including permanent magnet lenses and the various types of superconducting lenses; and final ly, an up-to-date survey of several kinds of highly unconventional magnetic lens, which may well change the appearance of future electron optical instruments very considerably after they cease to be unconventional.

Six Quantum Pieces
