Dance, Embodied Agency and Neuroplasticity in Aging


Book Description

Dance is a multi-sensory and multi-modal form of movement expression, one that stimulates creative potential for innovative action and intersubjective communication. Over the last two decades, results from systematic reviews have shown a spectrum of dance styles to be powerful, non-pharmacological agents in advancing intergenerational health across quality-of-life domains. This Research Topic invites further investigation into the specificity of how the dancing body can access untapped cognitive resources that promote brain health in the elderly. While early findings from dance protocols have been shown to impact positively on structural- and functional neuroplasticity, the link between embodied agency and brain health remains under-researched and under-theorized. Researchers are called to design methodologies that test the eco-validity of dance, explicitly examining the interactive effects of sentient expressive movement with cognitive reserve. One challenge, among many, lies in explicating and differentiating the elements of the dancing body itself, particularly when outcomes correlate with other forms of movement-rich exercise for the elderly.




Neuroplasticity in Learning and Rehabilitation

We possess as a cognitively aware species a high degree of function localization, but we still subscribe to the notion consistent with the model that dysfunction or damage to specific regions of the brain and nervous system may result in specific damage and deficits in behavior and function of individuals. Unfortunately, that is not enough to explain the capacity for plasticity, regeneration, spontaneous recovery, and optimization in neurological terms, and certainly not in its translation in clinical rehabilitation. Among the difficulties we face in the application of rehabilitation science in practice, the need to understand how the nervous system functions is less than understanding how it recovers from dysfunction, how we can effectively evaluate function, dysfunction and recovery, and how to provide a rational basis for making economic decisions about which method or methodology to invest. A neuroanatomical conceptualization is a not an option for rehabilitation practice. It is important to understand that what we are really attempting to achieve both in rehabilitation as well as in understanding the neurological basis of cognitive and motor improvement after trauma or stroke is not which brain area controls a given cognitive function, but how efficiently brain regions cooperate with each other and how novel connectivities may develop.

This book critically examines matters of age and aging in relation to dance. As a novel collection of diverse authors’ voices, this edited book traverses the human lifespan from early childhood to death as it negotiates a breadth of dance experiences and contexts. The conversations ignited within each chapter invite readers to interrogate current disciplinary attitudes and dominant assumptions and serve as catalysts for changing and evolving long entrenched views among dancers regarding matters of age and aging. Embodiment, Enaction, and Culture

The first interdisciplinary investigation of the cultural context of enactive embodiment, offering perspectives that range from the neurophilosophical to the anthropological. Recent accounts of cognition attempt to overcome the limitations of traditional cognitive science by reconceiving cognition as enactive and the cognizer as an embodied being who is embedded in biological, psychological, and cultural contexts. Cultural forms of sense-making constitute the shared world, which in turn is the origin and place of cognition. What Is the Evidence on the Role of the Arts in Improving Health and Well-Being


Book Description

Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.
