Linking Families, Learning, and Schooling

Book Description

Parents who are also educational researchers have access to a domain that is highly complex and not always available to other scholars. In this book, parent-researchers provide theoretical and practical insights into children’s learning in the home and at school. Readers are given a window into learning in the home context and how all family members organize or engage in that learning. Working on two levels, the book develops scholarly discussions about learning in the home (how is it organized, who the participants are, and what children are learning), and it illustrates the impacts that outside institutions, in particular schools, have on families It is unique in showcasing parent-research as a type of research paradigm with particular aspects and challenges. Both teachers and researchers can learn from these studies as they show the impact that schooling has on families and how institutional discourses and beliefs can both positively and negatively affect the dynamics of any family.

Sarah's Search

Book Description

Destiny! Fate! Sarah didn’t believe that life was contributable to these uncontrollable forces, but to the choices of human beings, and a very real and loving God. Although still single, she believed that God’s plan for her included marriage and a family with her as a pastor’s wife or hopefully, the wife of a foreign missionary. Her prayers for this very special man and their service together were more than a decade old. She saw no likely candidates, but trusted God with her life. So, Sarah lived her life in the moment serving God and looking for the joy God provided in each day. That joy now found her on a dream vacation in Toledo, Spain where she had fallen in love with the culture, the people, and the city. She had little more than a day left on her vacation and used her unscheduled time to visit an art gallery near her hostel where she met Fillip. They had a few hours together before Sarah dashed back to the safety of her familiar life. Vacation Sarah was little threat to Satan in Toledo even if her witness did win one man to the Enemy. The salvation of this waiter was an incidental note on the demon Warning’s report to his Master. But, Sarah doesn’t stay in her room and Fillip isn’t a man to give up easily. Warning, Satan's demon observer, reports to his Master that Sarah is becoming a real threat to Satan’s plans. Demons are ordered to intervene, but Sarah’s angels don’t leave her defenseless. Is God working and answering prayers? Will the assigned demons keep Sarah from a future with Fillip who is not saved and who has distanced himself from God?

Through Windows of Time

Book Description

Growing up with my grandparents, Harley and Laura Krigbaum (Pa and Ma) was more than just an experience. It was life altering. This book is an effort to keep those memories alive and make them beneficial to others, especially my own children and grandchildren. Their trials were many and their days were often hard; yet, they seldom complained about anything. If we thought things were not fair or should be different, they reminded us to count our blessings and things would look different. This book is based on the lives and stories they told us over the years and much time spent with them. Pa could trace his family back as far as the Mayflower. His Great Grandfather William’s great, great grandfather, Conrad Krigbaum, had been an immigrant from Holland in the early 1600s. Ma’s family had always lived in the south and had not only lived though the civil war, but horrible Indian wars, as well. Her parents had died when she was fifteen. Somehow through all the pain, she would only show love to everyone. The stories have been passed from generation to generation. Ma and Pa were both born in 1893, about twenty eight years after the Civil War. His family was from the north and hers from the south. Both families had suffered unbearably but tried to put it all behind them and move on. The past was in the past. Much of this book is based on actual events or stories. The dates and family members are as accurate as I could find; although, some names may have been changed or left out. More of it is based on only sketches of what I can remember. With memory limitations, I have added details for a better story.
