Horace E. Deemer Papers

Book Description

The Horace E. Deemer papers are predominantly correspondence dating from 1877 to 1915 and organized into categories of general, legal, political, and military. An additional grouping of correspondence includes communications with the State Library of Iowa and the State Historical Department, and another small set relates to the Panama Pacific International Exposition (1914-1915). Other documentation included in the papers are Deemer's notes as a student of law at the State University of Iowa in the 1870s, some lectures he presented in the law department of that same institution, addresses (including those made before the Prairie Club of Des Moines), and legal documents from various cases. Of note among a small set of pocket memoranda books are several related to the Republican Central Committee of Montgomery County, Iowa (1890), and a couple of volumes recording income Deemer earned selling peaches near his family's farm at West Liberty, Iowa (1878). A small set of complimentary tickets to various agricultural fairs were derived from his time as secretary of Montgomery County's agricultural society.
