Geographical Information is essential for the layout, planning and management of space, and involves taxation, cadastral data bases, environmental policy, water management, maintenance and protection of pipeline systems, terrain modelling and the making of maps. The third European conference brought together some 300 speakers and authors from academia, industry and government. The resulting monumental work is representative for the state-of-the-art of knowledge and information on Geographical Information.

Originally published in 1983. Attention is focused in this book on the principal functional, spatial and morphological changes which had taken place within West Germany’s uniquely arranged mosaic of cities, towns and intervening rural areas during the postwar period. The topics covered here have been carefully selected as key foci of interest, and their thematic approach is supported by a large variety of detailed, local case studies. This title will be of interest to students of urban geography and urban studies.

'The Farm as a Social Arena' focusses on the social life of farms from prehistory until c. 1700 AD, based mainly, but not exclusively, on archaeological sources. All over Europe people have lived on farms, at least from the Bronze Age onwards. The papers presented here discuss farms in Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Germany. Whether isolated or in hamlets or villages, farms have been important elements of the social structure for thousands of years. Farms were workplace and home for their inhabitants, women, men and children, and perhaps extended families - frequently sharing their space with domestic animals. Sometimes important events such as feasts, religious services and funerals also took place here. The household thus became a multi-faceted arena, which brought together a variety of community members that both shaped - and were shaped by - its social dynamics. At times work and other activities defined by the social arena that was the farm even affected long-term developments of society as such. There is no generally valid, recognised definition of what landscape actually is. On the basis of its relatedness to the environment, to aesthetics, territory, society, politics, economics, geography, planning, ethnology and philosophy, the concept of landscape is considered to be a "composite" notion shaped by a thousand years of Central European ideas and of literary and art history. In other words, the very term "landscape" is ambiguous and it is used in different ways both in the scholarly world and everyday speech. The aim of this volume is to present various possible approaches to the phenomenon of "landscape". Far from laying any claim to be exhaustive or comprehensive we have simply tried to do justice to the overarching interdisciplinary approach of the Zentrum für Landschaftsinterpretation und Tourismus (ZELT: Centre for Landscape Interpretation and Tourism) by singling out and addressing individual instances of this fascinating multifaceted phenomenon.
