My greatest debt of gratitude, however, I owe to Professor Joseph Quincy Adams, who originally suggested to me this task, who at the outset turned over to me his own extensive collection of notes, and who with sympathetic interest and ever ready aid encouraged me when the way seemed long and dark. I have tried hard to attain accuracy; yet the sheer multitude of details, and the inescapable errors that attend the mechanical operations Of typing and printing, have, I know, at times de feated my effort.
