Measurement of the Cross Section of Top Quark Pairs Produced in Association with a Photon in Lepton + Jets Events at 8́(s

Book Description

The inclusive production cross section of top quark pairs in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC with 13 TeV energy using the full RunII data collected by CMS in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with a total corresponding integrated luminosity of 137 fb 8́21 . The relative fraction of ttÎđ events normalized to inclusive tt production is measured. The cross section measurement provides important information about the electromagnetic coupling of the standard model top quark and is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is carried out in the in semileptonic decay channel with a well isolated high P T lepton (electron and muon), at least four jets out of which at least one must be b-tagged, and an isolated photon. Photons may be emitted from initial state radiation, top quarks, and decay products of top quarks. A simultaneous likelihood fit of control regions with the signal region is done to constraint the backgrounds and to extract the ttÎđ cross section. The measurement of the ratio of ttÎđ to tt is 0.02055 ℗ł 0.00099 (syst.) ℗ł 0.00099 (stat.) in the e + jets channel, 0.02156 ℗ł 0.00068 (syst.) ℗ł 0.00068 (stat.) in ℗æ + jets channel, and 0.02203 ℗ł 0.00064 (syst.) ℗ł 0.00064 (stat.) in the l + jets channel. The measured inclusive cross section is 3.81 ℗ł 0.15 (syst.) ℗ł 0.10 (stat.) pb in e + jets channel, 3.87 ℗ł 0.11 (syst.) ℗ł 0.07 (stat.) pb in ℗æ + jets channel, and 3.96 ℗ł 0.10 (syst.) ℗ł 0.06 (stat.) pb in l + jets channel for full RunII data. The results are in agreement with the standard model next to leading order prediction.

Observation of Top-quark Pair Production in Association with a Photon and Measurement of the Tt{u00AF}? Production Cross Section in pp Collisions at {u221A}s

Book Description

A search is performed for top-quark pairs (tt¯) produced together with a photon (?) with transverse energy greater than 20 GeV using a sample of tt¯ candidate events in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum, and one isolated electron or muon. The data set used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In total, 140 and 222 tt¯? candidate events are observed in the electron and muon channels, to be compared to the expectation of 79 ± 26 and 120 ± 39 non-tt¯? background events, respectively. The production of tt¯? events is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations away from the null hypothesis. The tt¯? production cross section times the branching ratio (BR) of the single-lepton decay channel is measured in a fiducial kinematic region within the ATLAS acceptance. The measured value is ?fidtt¯? × BR = 63 ± 8(stat)+17–13(syst) ± 1(lumi) fb per lepton flavor, in good agreement with the leading-order theoretical calculation normalized to the next-to-leading-order theoretical prediction of 48 ± 10 fb.

Cross-section Measurements of Top-quark Pair Production in Association with a Hard Photon at 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Book Description

25 years after the top quark's discovery, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN produces proton-proton collision data on unprecedented scales at unprecedented energies - and has heralded an era of top-quark precision measurements. The production of a top-quark pair in association with a photon ($t bar{t} gamma$) gives access to the electromagnetic top-photon coupling, one of the fundamental properties of the top quark. Various extensions of the Standard Model predict modifications of the coupling strength or structure, and deviations from the Standard Model prediction of the $t bar{t} gamma$ pr...

A Measurement of Top Quark Pair and Photon Production Cross Section with CMS Detector

Book Description

In this thesis the measurement of production cross section of top-quark pairs in association with a photon in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data was recorded at the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2012. This measurement aims to extend our knowledge of top quark properties and help to test consistency of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. Data-driven methods are used to estimate the photon identification efficiency and purity. The measured cross-section agrees with the standard model expectation.

Measurement of the Top Quark Pair Production Cross Section in Pp Collisions at Sqrt(s)

Book Description

The top quark pair production cross section is measured in dilepton events with one electron or muon, and one hadronically decaying tau lepton from the decay t anti-t to (l nu(l)) (tau nu(tau)) b anti-b, where l can be either an electron or a muon. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 inverse femtobarns for the electron channel and 2.2 inverse femtobarns for the muon channel, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. This is the first measurement of the t anti-t cross section explicitly including tau leptons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The measured value sigma(t anti-t) = 143 +/- 14 (stat.) +/- 22 (syst.) +/- 3 (lumi.) pb is consistent with the standard model predictions.
