Letting Go

Book Description

What would you do if you were granted your heart's desire-the one thing in life that you wanted the most-but then found out that you had only a limited time in which to enjoy it? What would you do if you were given knowledge and power, even to the point of delaying death, but then found out that such a gift might cost you your soul? A young man in Chicago faced the first question. At the same time and the same age, a young man in Boston faced the second one. Years later, in Seattle, as both men approached mid-life, they began a ten-year relationship. During those years, as each helped the other through illness and transition, the answers to both questions gradually emerged. Bill Gruber said of Mark Smetko, "At first he was my patient then he became my friend, and then he became my teacher." Letting Go is the memoir of that relationship. By the time it was over, both men had found a life they had never known before.

The Gospel according to Daniel

Book Description

Often we read the book of Daniel in one of two ways--either as a book about a heroic man whose righteousness should inspire us to keep the faith no matter what our circumstances, or as a roadmap to the end times that can, through careful study, perhaps tell us the day and hour (or nearly so) of Christ's return. Both, says Bryan Chapell, are sadly missing the bigger picture, that God is the hero of this story and he is in the midst of his unrelenting plan to rescue his people from their sin and its consequences. We mustn't simply make the man Daniel the object of our worship nor the subject of our debates. We may differ about prophetic details, Chapell says, but we should never miss the point that the book of Daniel is, like all of Old Testament Scripture, pointing us toward the grace of God, ultimately revealed in Christ. Pastors, teachers, and individual Christians studying the book of Daniel will find this volume a welcome addition to their library.

ExtraOrdinary

Book Description

ExtraOrdinary: An End of Life Story Without End is a spiritual memoir and love story about a man who became a healer and a teacher in his mid-nineties as his own life was coming to completion. Herman Liss, an Orthodox Jew. was described by a Christian mystic with the Buddhist term bodhisattva—a person who returns to this life to help lift others on their soul journey. It is said that great sages often come in the form of ordinary people. Herman Liss, Michele Tamaren's stepfather, was such a man. ExtraOrdinary tells of the love between Herman and his wife that continued after her passing. It shares the love between an elder and a young volunteer eighty years his junior and between a father and his adult daughter. It also explores how a hospice patient, through his compassion and his wisdom, helped heal those who cared for him. ExtraOrdinary is written in two voices: that of Michele, Herman's daughter not by blood but by blessing, and that of Herman's young volunteer, Michael Wittner, who created an award-winning film about the sacred passage from loss and despair to connection and joy. Herman taught by example how to love, how to listen, how to forgive, and how to be grateful for each day. ExtraOrdinary is a story of growth and learning, a joining of generations and cultures and hearts.
