This is a new translation and commentary by Clarissa on Drg Drsya Viveka, a short, but powerful scripture, attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have lived in the ninth century. The focus of this scripture is Awareness itself. In only 31 verses, the attention is taken from normal every day experiences, all the way to the very Source of attention, to Awareness, in which the experiences are happening. As the subject matter is extremely abstract, this book will be of interest to people who have been practising Yoga or related disciplines, and in whom some opening and preparation has already happened.

This early work on the self is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It details the ideas of what the self is an how to recognize it. This fascinating work is thoroughly recommended for inclusion on the bookshelf of anyone interested in self awareness. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. Drig-Drishya-Viveka, as the name indicates, is a Vedantic treatise of 46 verses inquiring into the nature of the ‘Seer’ (Drig) and the ‘See’ (Drishya), an inquiry which is of utmost importance for understanding the conclusions of the Vedanta philosophy. This brief treatise compresses much information into its body of few verses. The book contains the original text in Devanagari, its word-by-word meaning in English, a running translation, and exhaustive notes by Swami Nikhilananda. Three names are generally associated with the authorship of Drig-Drishya-Viveka, a prakarana treatise of the Vedanta philosophy, one of them being Sri Sankaracharya. The author of this translation is led to believe that the author of the treatise is Bharati Tirtha, head of the Sringeri Math from 1328 AD to 1380 AD. Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, India.
