The Power of Repentance

Book Description

We are all sinners. No human being has ever walked this earth unscathed from sins. But how is a person supposed to enter Jannah if he can’t help but commit sins day and night? Are those who enter Jannah human beings who never disobey Allah and have live life untainted by sins? Or is there justification for sinners to attain Allah’s blessings in their life? Dr. Yasir Qadhi unravels the very essence of repentance and what does repentance really mean to sinners like us. His explanation touches on the true role of a sinner and what are the steps to repent and thus, to gain Allah’s forgiveness.

Reflections

Book Description

Life is a journey. Every one of us is gifted a set amount of time on this earth, and we all must make the best of it before that time is up. While none of us knows exactly how long we have, what is amazing is that per unit time, we all get the exact same amount every unit. We all get different total amounts, but no one's hour is discernibly different from another person's hour. Yet, that is the only real similarity, as some people simply waste entire decades away, while others perform deeds in a few hours or even minutes that last for all of eternity! Some people live life so unremarkably that their existence and non-existence is almost the same to others; while some literally change the course of history. This book is meant to inspire us all on this journey of life so that we make the best use of our time. Each topic is chosen to be a quick, easy read with a message that is useful to people at any stage of this journey. These topics were all chosen and selected from khutbahs and talks that I've given over the last almost three decades of public speaking, with ex-tensive editing for content, along with the necessary stylistic editing and footnotes that a written work deserves

The Prayer of the Oppressed

Book Description

The Power of this prayer of Imam Muhammad al-Dar’i lies in its simplicity, its purity, and its sincere supplication. It is essentially a plea to God that our transgressions be overlooked, that divine mercy be bestowed upon us, that social justice be restored in spite of us, that wrongs be righted, and that righteousness reign once again in our lands, so that the destitute may no longer be in need, the young may be educated, the animals’ purpose fulfilled, rain restored, and bounties poured forth. It is a plea to be freed from the aggression of foreigners in lands over which they have no right—a plea much needed in our modern world, rampant as it is with invasions and territorial occupations. Ultimately, it asks not that our enemies be destroyed, but simply that their plots, and the harm they cause, be halted. Its essence is mercy, which in turn is the essence of the Messenger of God, Muhammad (peace and blessing of God be upon him): “And We have only sent you as a mercy to all the worlds.”

The Book of the Jihad of 'Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106)

Book Description

In 1105, six years after the first crusaders from Europe conquered Jerusalem, a Damascene Muslim jurisprudent named ’Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106) publicly dictated an extended call to the military jihad (holy war) against the European invaders. Entitled Kitab al-Jihad (The Book of the Jihad), al-Sulami’s work both summoned his Muslim brethren to the jihad and instructed them in the manner in which it ought to be conducted, covering topics as diverse as who should fight and be fought, treatment of prisoners and plunder, and the need for participants to fight their own inner sinfulness before turning their efforts against the enemy. Al-Sulami’s text is vital for a complete understanding of the Muslim reaction to the crusades, providing the reader with the first contemporary record of Muslim preaching against the crusaders. However, until recently only a small part of the text has been studied by modern scholars, as it has remained for the most part an unedited manuscript. In this book Niall Christie provides a complete edition and the first full English translation of the extant sections (parts 2, 8, 9 and 12) of the manuscript of al-Sulami’s work, making it fully available to modern readers for the first time. These are accompanied by an introductory study exploring the techniques that the author uses to motivate his audience, the precedents that influenced his work, and possible directions for future study of the text. In addition, an appendix provides translations of jihad sermons by Ibn Nubata al-Fariqi (d. 985), a preacher from Asia Minor whose rhetorical style was highly influential in the development of al-Sulami’s work.
