Does Africa have a future? What are the visions, hopes, ambitions and fears of young Africans for the future of the world, the continent, their nation, and their communities? How do they envision this world and their roles within it? These issues have not previously been explored collectively by Africans because of the enormous challenges and the preoccupation with the present. But Africa must not allow the enormity of the problems to blind it to its past and future. Africa must chart its own vision of a desirable future, and therefore young Africans, born just before or after independence, were challenged to reflect on the future of the continent. This book presents the response to that challenge. In this book, the voices of a new generation of Africa are heard exploring the future from personal and diverse perspectives. The authors have enumerated the ills of Africa, analyzed the problems and explored the opportunities. Remarkably, despite the daunting nature of the challenges, they were all hopeful about the future. They provided their visions of the future, suggest numerous ideas on how to build a new Africa, and implored Africans to take responsibility for the transformation of the continent. Given the current emphasis on African renaissance and union, the ideas presented here could become the basis for a truly shared vision for the continent.

This book describes a novel approach to the theory of sampling from finite populations. The new unifying approach is based on the sampling autocorrelation coefficient. Step by step, the author derives a general set of sampling equations that describe the estimators, their variances as well as the corresponding variance estimators. These equations are applicable for a whole family of different sampling designs, varying from simple surveys to complex surveys based on multistage sampling without replacement and unequal probabilities. This volume will be useful for survey practitioners faced with complex surveys. The book also considers constrained estimation problems that may occur in practice when linear or nonlinear economic restrictions are imposed on the population parameters to be estimated and the observations stem from different surveys. For example, regression estimators and consistent estimation of contingency tables are special cases within this rather broad class of constrained estimators. This volume also offers a guide to little-known connections between design-based survey sampling and other areas of statistics and related disciplines. The common underlying principles in the distinct fields are explained by an extensive use of the geometry of the ancient Pythagorean theorem. Apart from its applied importance, the book may also serve as a textbook in advanced courses and as a reference for researchers in statistics and empirical economics. In order to make the text as self-contained as possible, the treatise includes one chapter with the main results from statistics, including regression analysis. Some familiarity with calculus and matrix algebra is a sufficient prerequisite. Paul Knottnerus received his PhD in economics in 1989 from the University of Amsterdam. In 1995 he joined Statistics Netherlands, Department of Methods and Informatics. Previously he spent several years with Dutch Telecom. He is author of the book Linear Models with Correlated Disturbances (1991).

THE GLOBAL MONEY SYSTEM NO LONGER WORKS IN OUR BEST INTERESTS; WE NEED A SERIOUS OVERHAUL OF MONEY - AND OF OUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS IT. Based on the four mega-trends of monetary instability, global greying (an ageing global population), the information revolution, and climate change, Bernard Lietaer looks at different scenarios of what the world might be like in 2020. The Corporate Millennium: governments are disbanded, central banks become irrelevant and the world is run with Big Brother control by huge companies with their own currencies. CARING COMMUNITIES: after a monetary crash, people retreat into small, self-sustaining communities, like tribes. HELL ON EARTH: in which the breakdown of life as we know it is followed by a highly individualistic free-for-all, resulting in an ever more obscene gulf between rich and poor. SUSTAINABLE ABUNDANCE: envisages a world where we take better care of the environment, re-engage the poor and the unemployed in mainstream society and give back time and fulfilment to the over-worked, while providing the elderly with a high level of personal care. A society of sustainable abundance is achievable - but only if we are willing to re-think our money system and use money innovations that have already proven effective somewhere in the world today.

First published in 1954, a time when few books on African history were written from an African perspective. An intimate history of Africa and its ancient civilizations, the book opposed the stereotyped and often racist histories of Africa. Today, a half century after its initial publication, African Glory still provides a vivid and dynamic connection to the African past.
