PostDomestiCity is an inquiry and speculative exercise into the conditions of obsolescence in the post-industrial city, from a contemporary perspective. Working with three paradigmatic cases that were conceived from industrial logics—the Packard plant in Detroit, Lima’s PREVI neighbourhood, and theGrand’Mare complex in Rouen—, we explore alternative ways of reusing, reprogramming, and redensifying the built environment as alternatives to demolition. Relevant voices in the field of architecture share their approaches and visions of the future for the pre-existing city, helping us imagine post-domesticity in the current climate crisis and socio-technological context. La proliferación de huertos urbanos en las ciudades no es un fenómeno circunstancial: responde a una serie de necesidades económicas, urbanísticas, ambientales y sociales que reflejan un cambio profundo en la concepción de la ciudad y en su relación con el entorno agrícola. El presente estudio analiza la situación actual de la agricultura urbana y aporta propuestas metodológicas concretas para introducir el cultivo agrícola en la ciudad y en los edificios. Empowering Squatter Citizen


Book Description

With the rapid growth in urban poverty in Africa, Asia and Latin America, most cities now have 30 to 60 per cent of their population living in shanty towns. The civil and political rights of these people are either ignored or constantly contravened. They face multiple deprivations, including hunger, long hours working for inadequate incomes; illness, injury and premature deaths that arise from dangerous living conditions and inadequate water supplies, sanitation and healthcare. Many face the constant threat of eviction and other forms of violence. None of these problems can be addressed without local changes, and Empowering Squatter Citizen contends that urban poverty is underpinned by the failure of national governments and aid agencies to support local processes. It makes the case for redirecting support to local organizations, whether governmental, non-governmental or grassroots. . The book includes case studies of innovative government organizations (in Thailand, Mexico, Philippines and Nicaragua) and community-driven processes (in India, South Africa, Pakistan and Brazil), which illustrate more effective approaches to urban poverty reduction. Such approaches include strengthening the organizations of the poor and homeless so that they are accountable to their members, are able to develop their own solutions and have more capacity to negotiate with the institutions that are meant to deliver infrastructure, services, credit and land for housing. Such support for local processes is crucial for meeting the Millennium Development Goals in urban areas.




Agriculture in the City

During the 1990s, several national economies saw their urban food markets collapse. Like Zambia, Mozambique, and Armenia, Cuba responded to this crisis with a food program that included support to urban agriculture: farming in the city. As a result, food prices are increasing, free markets have been reinstated, production cooperatives have been linked with markets, land has been redistributed, and areas under export crops have been converted to domestic food crops. The Cuban government is now calling upon its cities to become more self-reliant for food OCo a focus that is dramatically modifying the landscape, lifestyle, and food supply of Havana residents."




RECHARGEABLE SUSTAINABILITY THE KEY IS THE STORAGE

Between 2007 and mid-2011, the Tragsa Group has financed the project of R&D DINA-MAR, "Management of Aquifer Recharge within the framework of sustainable development". The project has been centered on studies related to aquifer management from different perspectives and on its potential for consolidation as an effective water management technique. In October 2010 the Group published a book compiling the major contributions of the research team, entitled: "DINA-MAR," "Management of aquifer artificial recharge in the context of sustainable development: Technological stage", with 496 pages written in Spanish. The book collected visions and results of technicians from more than eight different disciplines. However, some aspects were not included, such as those contributions and conclusions reached in the periodic coordination meetings, formal and informal, and from both Workshops and open debates held in the course of the project. In order to unify emanating contributions from different actors over four years’ time, the final synthesis book was written with the aim of providing additional and complementary information to the above-mentioned publication. It was translated in English to make it accessible to a larger scientific community. The text has four sections: 1) a summary of the Workshop held on June 30, 2008, 2) a summary and conclusions of the final publication, 3) a summary of the closing workshop held 25 May 2011 and 4) general project conclusions. As it is a continuous learning process, the publication lacks the usual conclusions section, provided that it occupies the entire book, as well as the bibliography, which provide only two reviews, having a broad development in the book which complements. We hope that this is of interest and accomplishes the Mission for which has been carried out, dissemination, technology transfer and a study of pros and cons of a water management technique that is becoming more common. -Demonstration sites as it is the case of the hydrogeological routes “Caminitos de Agua” (little paths of water), implemented during the development of the project, represent an important line of action in terms of dissemination and environmental education. This example, currently being applied in Spain, should be implemented in other places of interest.
