Excerpt from Elizabethan Translations From the Italian During the winter of 1891 - 92, I made a list of all English dramas produced between the accession of Edward VI, in 1549, and the closing of the theatres by the Parliamentarians, in 1642. My list showed that some fifteen hundred plays belong to the period of the great drama of the reigns of Elizabeth and James I, of which about one-half are extant. Of extant Eliza bethan dramas it set apart about one-third as Italianate; they are Italian in source, or plot, or scene, or general tone. Much has been written about Italian influences in Elizabethan litera ture, and lies scattered throughout English criticism of the last three hundred years. Excerpt from The Devil's Charter It is natural to suppose that Barnes would make use of the English translation rather than of the Italian original, and this indeed seems to have been the case. In two passages at least the phraseology somewhat recalls Fenton's work, though the resem blance is not particularly striking (of. Notes on 11. 138, and in lines 2214-6 there is a reference to a saying of St. Gregory which may have been borrowed from a passage inserted in the English translation and not to be found in any other version it does not, however, occur in F enton in connection with the same scene as in Barnes, and is too well known for much to be built upori its pre sence. More satisfactory evidence is aflorded by the occurence in Tin Diails Charter of forms of proper names identical with those used by F enton, who, translating from Chomedey, generally gives the names in a French guise. In this learned and delightful book, John L. Lievsay shows how energetic English printers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries helped to bring the language and literature of Italy into England. His description of how these men, who were not usually troubled by modesty and sometimes not by honesty, capitalized on and helped to create the Englishman's appetite for things Italian will be welcomed by scholars; his analysis of the contents of libraries and catalogues and his commentary on the books themselves will be relished by those who enjoy the scholarship and the gossip behind the collecting and printing of books. In his first essay, "English Printers, Italian Texts," the author identifies the printers and the variety of Italian authors. Torriano's proverbs and Florio's language manuals met a receptive audience. John Wolfe published Pietro Aretino under false imprint, inventing fictional places of publication, and his printings of Machiavelli, suppressed in Italy and not generally available in translation, were highly successful. John Bill, King's Printer, even published an Italian translation of Bacon's Essay. Lievsay then turns to the Italian titles found in library collections of the time, among them Thomas James's catalogs of the Bodleian Library, the bookseller Robert Martin's lists, and the libraries of eminent Englishmen, including those of John Locke and Sir Edward Coke. Lord Herbert's library held a book by "Partenio Etiro," an anagram for Aretino. The work of Tomaso Garzoni has been neglected, but Lievsay revives it in the third essay with descriptions of Garzoni's immensely popular Piazza and Theatro; and quotations from his Mirabile cornutopia—a mock letter of consolation to cuckolds—are evidence of the high spirit of this learned and bizarre man. The essays are based on lectures given at the University of Pennsylvania in the spring of 1969 for the A. S. W. Rosenbach Fellowship in Bibliography.

Book Description

Engaging with histories of the book and of reading, as well as with studies of material culture, this volume explores ’popularity’ in early modern English writings. Is ’popular’ best described as a theoretical or an empirical category in this period? How can we account for the gap between modern canonicity and early modern print popularity? How might we weight the evidence of popularity from citations, serial editions, print runs, reworkings, or extant copies? Is something that sells a lot always popular, even where the readership for print is only a small proportion of the population, or does popular need to carry something of its etymological sense of the public, the people? Four initial chapters sketch out the conceptual and evidential issues, while the second part of the book consists of ten short chapters-a ’hit parade’- in which eminent scholars take a genre or a single exemplar - play, romance, sermon, or almanac, among other categories-as a means to articulate more general issues. Throughout, the aim is to unpack and interrogate assumptions about the popular, and to decentre canonical narratives about, for example, the sermons of Donne or Andrewes over Smith, or the plays of Shakespeare over Mucedorus. Revisiting Elizabethan literary culture through the lenses of popularity, this collection allows us to view the subject from an unfamiliar angle-in which almanacs are more popular than sonnets and proclamations more numerous than plays, and in which authors familiar to us are displaced by names now often forgotten.
