Eve Spoke

Today, scientists cite language as the distinctively human feature. But what is language--a sign, a grunt? A sound with collective symbolic meaning? This remarkable book seeks to set the record straight with a critical refinement of the language theory, providing readers for the first time with a scientific explanation of how Eve came to speak at all. Free to Speak

Book Description

The woman at the well is nameless and faceless. Her story is a mere blurb in the gospels, quickly read, labeled, and filed. Preachers condemn her, belittle her, and dismiss her, but not Jesus. She mattered to her Creator so much He orchestrated this unique encounter to prove His love for the outcast. How many of us feel condemned, ridiculed, and forgotten, living lives that feel empty and futile? How many of us live in the deserts of "what if" and "if only"? Could it be that the Spirit gives us this story of a nameless woman to open our eyes to the wonder of the grace of Jesus? Could it be that this story is to fill us with hope that we would drink of the living water and live? Could it be she is nameless because she is everyone who lives day to day just doing what's necessary to get by and never tasting the goodness of God's love? My Lord stayed for two days in a Samaritan town because of this woman. My intent has been to give her a historical setting that you may see her as Jesus saw her, that you be filled with compassion for her, for others, and for yourself. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who seeks out the lost sheep who cry out in the night for rescue. Are you a "woman at the well" crying out in the night?

Emotional Creature

Book Description

Performed by an ensemble of young women, EMOTIONAL CREATURE is made up of original monologues—and irresistible songs—about and for girls. Placing their stories squarely center stage, it gives full expression to their secret voices and innermost thoughts, highlighting the diversity and commonality of the issues they face. EMOTIONAL CREATURE is a call, a reckoning, an education, an act of empowerment for girls, and an illumination for parents and for us all. Eve Ensler’s Emotional Creature is a vehicle to empower girls and inspire their activism. V-Girls is a global network of girl activists and advocates. V-Girls is rooted in youth-driven activism. A V-Girls Action Guide provides service-learning curriculum for middle and high school youth based on issues covered in Emotional Creature, with an emphasis on activism. Organizers can start a V-Girls club or incorporate V-Girls resources into an existing youth program.

The Tempter's Voice

Book Description

Why was the story of Adam, Eve, and the Serpent so important to medieval literary culture? Eric Jager argues that during the Middle Ages the story of the Fall was incorporated into a comprehensive myth about language. Drawing on a wide range of texts, Jager shows how patristic and medieval authors used the Fall to confront practical and theoretical problems in many areas of life and thought—including education, hermeneutics, rhetoric, feudal politics, and gender relations. Jager explores the Fall's meaning for clergy and laity, nobles and commoners, men and women.Among the works Jager discusses are texts by Ambrose, Augustine, the early Christian poet Avitus, and scholastic authors; Old English biblical epics; Middle English spiritual writings; French courtesy books; and the poetry of Dante and Chaucer. Examples from the visual arts are included as well. Jager links medieval interpretations of the Fall to underlying cultural anxieties about the ambiguity of the sign, the instability of oral tradition, the pleasure of the text, and the many rhetorical guises of the tempter's voice. He also assesses the modern and postmodern legacy of the Fall, showing how this myth continues to embody central ideas concerning language. The Tempter's Voice will be essential reading for scholars and students in such fields as medieval studies, literary theory, gender theory, comparative literature, cultural history, and the history of religion.
