Ann Hamilton

"Cloth making -- among the oldest forms of human cultural production -- provides inspiration for Ann Hamilton's multi-venue project, 'habitus', located at three sites: The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Municipal Pier 9, and on social media. 'habitus' weaves text, textile, and image together as mediums for an imaginative and tactile exchange between artist and audience. The museum's galleries display Hamilton's selection of historical objects -- including literacy commonlace books, textile sample books, dolls, and needwork portfolios -- borrowed from Philadelphia museums and public collections. Printed passages from published writings referencing the social and material life of textiles, and collected through an open call to the public at http://cloth-a-commonplace.tumblr.com, will be available free to museum visitors. Jonathan Lyndon Chase


Book Description

Jonathan Lyndon Chase is a Philadelphia-based visual artist whose works--drawings, paintings, sculpture, video and sound--focus primarily on Black, queer domestic intimacy. The artist was invited to work with the FWM Studio in the museum's renowned screenprinting facilities to conceptualize and produce an original design. Chase employed this newly-created yardage as canvases on which to make a new suite of paintings, as well as soft sculpture and clothing. Big Wash is the artist's first solo museum exhibition and will feature new work created during their 2019-2020 screenprinting residency at FWM. For Big Wash, Chase turns their attention to the laundromat as a site that is at once private and public. With newly created paintings, drawings, and video, they continue their signature ability to move seamlessly between history and fantasy, as well as interior and exterior, with vivid depictions of eroticism, domesticity, queerness, nostalgia, and tenderness. Chase's vibrant textile design punctuates the exhibition and acts as a stand-in for Black queer bodies navigating both the rawness of the urban landscape and intimacy of domestic settings.




John Currin

Her sculptures' abstract shapes reference the mark of the human hand--evidence of the artist's meticulous process of cutting, shaping, and assembling her works from thousands of cedar blocks--while simultaneously evoking the grandeur and power of nature. Guest curated by Mark Rosenthal, Ursula von Rydingsvard: The Contour of Feeling focuses on von Rydingsvard's artistic development since 2000 and her continued commitment to experimentation throughout her career. Featuring approximately 20 works--over half of which are large-scale--the exhibition includes many sculptures never before exhibited in the United States. Constructed from leather--a first for the artist--the piece's scale is in keeping with recent work, while the new material represents an expansion for von Rydingsvard's practice. In the spring of 1865, a seemingly unremarkable dishcloth played a crucial role in ending the Civil War as the South's flag of surrender at Appomattox. A Confederate horseman carried a humble white linen towel into the lines of General George Custer, near the courthouse at Appomattox. The horseman was sent on behalf of General Robert E. Lee, who was requesting a suspension of hostilities while General Ulysses S. Grant proposed terms of surrender. Focusing on this Confederate Flag of Truce, Clark explores the legacy of symbols and challenges the power of propaganda, erasures, and omissions. By making the Truce Flag - a cloth that brokered peace and represented the promise of reconciliation - into a monumental alternative to the infamous Confederate Battle Flag and its pervasive divisiveness, Clark instigates a role reversal and aims to correct a historical imbalance. Monumental Cloth, The Flag We Should Know is published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia, on view from March to August 2019. The works of art presented here are a timely catalyst for dialogue about the scars of the Confederacy and America's ability to acknowledge and reckon with racial injustice.

In honor of the Fabric Workshop and Museum's 40th anniversary, Process and Practice tells a story of contemporary art at FWM that highlights process along with product. It documents FWM's history of collaboration with established and emerging artists-in-residence since the 2002 publication of New Materials as New Media. Some of the over 30 artists featured include Mark Bradford, Ann Hamilton, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Richard Tuttle, Sarah Sze, Nick Cave, Theaster Gates, Joan Jonas and Trisha Brown, among many others. Also featured are essays by Nancy Princenthal, Patterson Sims and Susan Lubowsky Talbott, FWM's current director.
