A Curse of Roses

Book Description

Based on Portuguese legend, this #OwnVoices historical fantasy is an epic tale of mystery, magic, and making the impossible choice between love and duty... With just one touch, bread turns into roses. With just one bite, cheese turns into lilies. There’s a famine plaguing the land, and Princess Yzabel is wasting food simply by trying to eat. Before she can even swallow, her magic—her curse—has turned her meal into a bouquet. She’s on the verge of starving, which only reminds her that the people of Portugal have been enduring the same pain for years. If only it were possible to reverse her magic. Then she could turn flowers into food. Fatyan, a beautiful Enchanted Moura, is the only one who can help. But she is trapped by magical binds. She can teach Yzabel how to control her curse—if Yzabel sets her free with a kiss. As the King of Portugal’s betrothed, Yzabel would be committing treason, but what good is a king if his country has starved to death? With just one kiss, Fatyan is set free. And with just one kiss, Yzabel is yearning for more. She’d sought out Fatyan to help her save the people. Now, loving her could mean Yzabel’s destruction. A Curse of Roses includes themes, imagery, and content that might be triggering for some readers. Discussions of religious-based self harm, religious-based eating disorders, and religious-based internalized homophobia appear throughout the novel.

Brimming with keen observations and wild assumptions on human anatomy, customs, languages, rituals, dwellings, and more, The Land of Stone Flowers is as absurd as it is astounding, examining contradictory and nonsensical human behaviors through the lens of the fantastic: from the bewitching paper wizards who live in humans' wallets to their invisible hats, known as "moods," which cloud their view of the world. Bursting with intricate and evocative illustrations, The Land of Stone Flowers will draw readers into a world of fantasy and fable that slyly reveals many hidden truths about human existence.

Flowers of the Fern

Book Description

About the Book Flowers of the Fern is a small story that provides the reader with quite personal stories about its characters. It isn't the high adventure story where a ragtag bunch assembles to take down a sorcerer or destroy an evil king. It’s more of a detective story wrapped up in fantasy clothing. It is not defined by its scale or its intentions in storytelling. Instead, it provides a different caliber of fantasy story to counteract many of the larger, often overbearing series that come out now. The tale is something thoughtful, engaging, and relatable, and it is something that won’t intimidate the reader with its length or its content. About the Author Matthew Allen-Johnson was born in Champaign, Illinois. He is a self-proclaimed shut-in who spends most of his time reading and writing. He enjoys science-fiction, fantasy, and the days of yore. Johnson also likes collecting old music from the 1920s through the 1960s. He also loves movies, especially the bad ones. Perhaps because his grandfather was a detective, he has always had an inclination towards crime stories and police procedurals. In a way, this novel is something of a subconscious marriage between his love of Anglo-Saxon history and a few episodes of “Columbo.”
