Fluid Mechanics and Statistical Methods in Engineering

Book Description

This book is a volume in the Penn Press Anniversary Collection. To mark its 125th anniversary in 2015, the University of Pennsylvania Press rereleased more than 1,100 titles from Penn Press's distinguished backlist from 1899-1999 that had fallen out of print. Spanning an entire century, the Anniversary Collection offers peer-reviewed scholarship in a wide range of subject areas.

Statistical Physics of Fluids

Book Description

The focus is on the main physical ideas and mathematical methods of the microscopic theory of fluids, starting with the basic principles of statistical mechanics. The detailed derivation of results is accompanied by explanation of their physical meaning. The same approach refers to several specialized topics of the liquid state, most of which are recent developments, such as: a perturbation approach to the surface tension, an algebraic perturbation theory of polar nonpolarizable fluids and ferrocolloids, a semi-phenomenological theory of the Tolman length and some others.

Statistical Methods for Engineers

Book Description

STATISTICAL METHODS FOR ENGINEERS, 3e, International Edition offers a balanced, streamlined one-semester introduction to Engineering Statistics that emphasizes the statistical tools most needed by practicing engineers.

Physics of Continuous Matter, Second Edition

Book Description

Physics of Continuous Matter: Exotic and Everyday Phenomena in the Macroscopic World, Second Edition provides an introduction to the basic ideas of continuum physics and their application to a wealth of macroscopic phenomena. The text focuses on the many approximate methods that offer insight into the rich physics hidden in fundamental continuum mechanics equations. Like its acclaimed predecessor, this second edition introduces mathematical tools on a "need-to-know" basis. New to the Second Edition This edition includes three new chapters on elasticity of slender rods, energy, and entropy. It also offers more margin drawings and photographs and improved images of simulations. Along with reorganizing much of the material, the author has revised many of the physics arguments and mathematical presentations to improve clarity and consistency. The collection of problems at the end of each chapter has been expanded as well. These problems further develop the physical and mathematical concepts presented. With worked examples throughout, this book clearly illustrates both qualitative and quantitative physics reasoning. It emphasizes the importance in understanding the physical principles behind equations and the conditions underlying approximations. A companion website provides a host of ancillary materials, including software programs, color figures, and additional problems.

Basics of Fluid Mechanics

Book Description

This book describes the fundamentals of fluid mechanics phenomena for engineers and others. This book is designed to replace all introductory textbook(s) or instructor's notes for the fluid mechanics in undergraduate classes for engineering/science students but also for technical people. It is hoped that the book could be used as a reference book for people who have at least some basics knowledge of science areas such as calculus, physics, etc. This version is a PDF document. The website [http: //www.potto.org/FM/fluidMechanics.pdf ] contains the book broken into sections, and also has LaTeX resources

Statistical Turbulence Modelling For Fluid Dynamics - Demystified: An Introductory Text For Graduate Engineering Students

Book Description

This book is intended for self-study or as a companion of lectures delivered to post-graduate students on the subject of the computational prediction of complex turbulent flows. There are several books in the extensive literature on turbulence that deal, in statistical terms, with the phenomenon itself, as well its many manifestations in the context of fluid dynamics. Statistical Turbulence Modelling for Fluid Dynamics — Demystified differs from these and focuses on the physical interpretation of a broad range of mathematical models used to represent the time-averaged effects of turbulence in computational prediction schemes for fluid flow and related transport processes in engineering and the natural environment. It dispenses with complex mathematical manipulations and instead gives physical and phenomenological explanations. This approach allows students to gain a 'feel' for the physical fabric represented by the mathematical structure that describes the effects of turbulence and the models embedded in most of the software currently used in practical fluid-flow predictions, thus counteracting the ill-informed black-box approach to turbulence modelling. This is done by taking readers through the physical arguments underpinning exact concepts, the rationale of approximations of processes that cannot be retained in their exact form, and essential calibration steps to which the resulting models are subjected by reference to theoretically established behaviour of, and experimental data for, key canonical flows.

Fluid Mechanics

Book Description

Fluid Mechanics: An Intermediate Approach addresses the problems facing engineers today by taking on practical, rather than theoretical problems. Instead of following an approach that focuses on mathematics first, this book allows you to develop an intuitive physical understanding of various fluid flows, including internal compressible flows with s

An Introduction to Statistical Methods, 23rd Edition

Book Description

This best-selling textbook has been revised by adding a chapter on the theory of games. First published in 1957, this book continues to serve as a text for students taking statistics as a course in Commerce, Management, Economics or any other area of the social sciences. Emphasis has been laid on the significance of various statistical concepts to help readers understand and interpret them. A large number of illustrations have been provided to better demonstrate the use of statistical techniques in diverse situations and understand their applicability better.
