Abstract: The Nutrition Program for the Elderly addresses dietary, health, and social problems of older persons. The first of 5 annual waves of evaluative data was obtained from91 meal sites through interviews, project and site records, and observations. Included is a description of the program and local variations, an assessment of the impact of the program on participants, and program characteristics which influence that impact. Differences are described among recent entrants, long-term participants, former participants, and non-participating neighbors. Specific impact variables such as nutritional and health status, isolation, life satisfaction, longevity and independent living are examined. Other issues of concern include enrollment; relationship of outside social activity to program participation; level of participation; Area Agency role in nutrition projects; and delivery of support servicesin meals, transportation, recreation, nutrition education, shopping assistance and health care.

Abstract: A model community action program which would provide inexpensive, nutritious meals to low income elderly community members is presented. The program also would make surplus foods, food stamps, and consumer education more readily available to older citizens, and provide employment opportunities. The project addresses those socioeconomic, emotional, educational, and medical factors that result in poor nutrition in the elderly. The goals, rationale, and sponsorship of nutrition programs for the elderly are discussed. Such aspects as staff, site, equipment, financing, and budget are examined. A timetable for establishing a nutrition program is proposed. Ideas also are suggested for expanding program activities to include non-food areas of consumer protection and money-saving services. Appendices list typical menus and equipment for meals served in senior centers, and references for information on food, nutrition, and meal preparation. (nm).

Abstract: The nutritional needs of the elderly and federal programs designed to help meet these needs are discussed. Many factors affect the nutritional status of the elderly including economic, medical, and environmental conditions. Many of the elderly have insufficient incomes to fullfill their nutritional needs. Many have chronic illnesses affecting the intake and utilization of nutrients. Others are prohibited from obtaining help because of distance, ignorance or fear. Many elderly have protein and vitamin deficient diets, while ingesting large amounts of fat and carbohydrates. To correct these inequities, the Title VII Nutrition Program for the Aged was funded beginning in 1973. While the initial program was limited in scope, in 1975 it was expanded to more sites and served more of the elderly.
