Fostering Upper Elementary Students' Literacy Skills in the Home


Book Description

The purpose of this project was to explore effective ways upper elementary literacy can be supported in the home and then to design a resource, in the form of a website, for parents to use at home to support their upper elementary child's literacy development. The project addressed the problem that there are few resources available for parents to their child's upper elementary literacy skills in the home. The resulting website includes three different web pages each defining and explaining step-by-step how parents can support their children in the areas of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, through the use of different activities and strategies. This project is needed due to the fact that the level of literacy skills required in the upper elementary grades is complex and parents are not always sure of how to support their child with these skills.
