Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters: A Missouri History of Twentieth Century Crimes and Criminals

Book Description

When people think of organized crime, the cities of Chicago, Las Vegas, and New York come to mind, but the state of Missouri has produced a long list of high profile criminals known across the nation. In fact, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, and Fred "Killer" Burke--all high on the FBI's most wanted list--had ties to the state. In Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters - A Missouri History of Twentieth Century Crimes and Criminals, retired ATF agent and author David True details the true stories of the state's most notorious criminals. Missouri native David True, who grew up in the shadow of the St. Louis underworld, has compiled an exhaustive list of Missouri's most notorious criminals based upon three decades of research and insider knowledge from investigating gangland crimes and criminals. Read Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters and see the dark side of Missouri too disturbing to be discussed in travel guides!

Outlaws, mobsters & crooks : from the Old West to the Internet

Book Description

Presents the lives of seventy-five North American criminals including the nature of their crimes, their motivations, and information relating to the law officers who challenged them. This set chronicles the history of seventy-three famous and infamous criminals, including duos like Bonnie and Clyde and gangs such as The Purple Hand Gang. Each volume includes a reader's guide that explains the purpose of the set and what the reader will find in each entry, an alphabetical listing of the outlaws, and a time line encompassing 1750 to the present that puts the outlaws into the context of the world at the time they were active. An index for the set is included in each volume. The outlaws are broken down into mobsters, racketeers and gamblers, robbers, computer criminals, spies, swindlers, terrorists, bandits and gunslingers, bootleggers and pirates. Each individual entry includes a biographical look at the outlaw, his or her crimes, and the end result of those crimes. Information boxes that give the reader little-known facts about the criminal's life; suggestions for books to read ( Badmen by Jay Robert Nash, [M. Evans, 1973] seems to be the most suggested title); movies relating to that criminal; and the many photographs all add to the set's interest level. There is no glossary, but many words that a middle school student would find difficult are defined within the text. Browsers and researchers alike will make good use of this enjoyable reference set due to its fact-filled content and peek into the lives of such a wide variety of outlaws. Because of the time line, this book would also be helpful for students who need to do a report on a particular time period and want to choose an outlaw as their focus. While the cost may be prohibitive for some, it would be a good addition because of its short, factual chapters and interesting tidbits of information.-LynnEvarts. The Gangs of St. Louis

Book Description

St. Louis was a city under siege during Prohibition. Seven different criminal gangs violently vied for control of the town's illegal enterprises. Although their names (the Green Ones, the Pillow Gang, the Russo Gang, Egan's Rats, the Hogan Gang, the Cuckoo Gang and the Shelton Gang) are familiar to many, their exploits have remained largely undocumented until now. Learn how an awkward gunshot wound gave the Pillow Gang its name, and read why Willie Russo's bizarre midnight interview with a reporter from the St. Louis Star involved an automatic pistol and a floating hunk of cheese. From daring bank robberies to cold-blooded betrayals, The Gangs of St. Louis chronicles a fierce yet juicy slice of the Gateway City's history that rivaled anything seen in New York or Chicago.
