General Philip Schuyler House, Vol. 2 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from General Philip Schuyler House, Vol. 2 of 2: Historic Structure Report Mortar analysis was carried out in the mortar laboratory at the hap office in Lowell, ma. Each sample was pulverized using a mortar and pestle. Approximately 20 grams of pulverized sample were then weighed out, swirled in a solution of diluted hydrochloric acid, and separated into sands and fines components.2 The color of the liquid filtrate resulting from the separation process was noted for each sample, and the sand and fines components were dried. After drying, the sands and fines were weighed, and a calculation was made of the approximate weight of acid-soluble materials that had been present in the sample. The color of the sands and fines were noted, and the fines were color-matched using the Munsell Color Notation System for soil. Based on the results of the analysis, samples were grouped by shared characteristics and given relative dates. This information has been incorporated into the general text. It has also been summarized here, in the following section. The analytical summary is in turn is followed by a numerical list of the mortar samples removed, which includes each sample's location, and plans of the house denoting the sample locations.
