Book Description
The Ghost-Seer; Or, The Apparitionist, written by German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, was originally published in German between 1787 and 1789 in the Journal Thalia. This English edition dates from 1853 as translated by Theodore Martin and Henry George Bohn. Originally being entitled The Armenian. The Ghost-Seer, is Friedrich Schiller's only novel. It is a fragmented experimental work with a complex plot and quasi-operatic setting in Venice. Centred around the tale of a rich young prince and his friend seeking pleasure in Venice. All is well until they meet a strange masked Armenian that spooks the pair by giving them a strange prophecy that comes true. The character develops power over the prince and his friend, drawing them into dark forms of magic and occultism. The narrative becomes increasingly opaque, and it is uncertain whether the apparitions the prince witnesses is a complex hoax or genuine terrors from the spirit-world. The Sport of Destiny is a short story centred around a prince, this time, a power hungry one that is seeking control. The tale plots the insanity that ensues from his intense desire, and his ultimate incarceration.
