Guide to the Materials for American History in Cuban Archives (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Guide to the Materials for American History in Cuban Archives The mission to the Cuban archives, of which these pages are the outcome, was undertaken for the purpose of making known what materials, if any, existed in those repositories bearing upon the history of the United States. In addition to materials on the relations be tween that country and Cuba, there was a strong presumption, which the results have confirmed, that there might still be found at Havana portions of the Louisiana and Florida archives which were taken there in 1810, but removed to Spain (in part or in whole) in the years 1888 and 1889. Before presenting lists or calendars of the documents which were discovered, it seems proper, and indeed requisite to an understanding of the items composing the lists, that some account of the Cuban archives, their vicissitudes and their actual conditions should be given. The documents are in the Archivo Nacional at Havana, except a few, relating to the ecclesiastical history of Louisiana and the Floridas, which are in the archives of the bishopric of Havana.
