The reputation of Warren Hastings, the Governor of Bengal (from 13th April, 1772 to Ist February, 1785), has passed through remarkable vicissitueds. Calumny, invective and obloguy have made this builder of British India, the most controverial figure. Thousands of educated peopel both in England and India are filled with indignition when they read of his atrocious acts, the judicial murder of Nand Kumar, the extermination of the Rohillas and the plunder of the Begums. The author who passed several years of his Indian Civil Serivce in the province of Rohilkhand-had the chance of making personal investigations agianst the worst of Hasting's crimes, i.e. the extermination of the Rohillas. To his utter suprise, he found that the terrible accusations levelled against him by the great writers and rhetoricians, namely, Burke, Mill and Macualay, which fill Englishmen with shame even to day, ware misrepresentations and garbling of documents, suppressing the truth.
