Health Gadgets and Apps

Book Description

In India, the combination of an aging population and adverse behaviors such as obesity and smoking will create epidemics of diseases like diabetes, heart problems, and other chronic diseases that last a lifetime and are difficult to treat. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), the spread of chronic disease will increase 2.5 times with numbering 84 million in 1995 to 228 million in 2025. In developing countries like India, chronic disease will spread with a rate of 60%. Also with emergence of COVID -19 pandemic since Dec 2019 the existing problems of chronic diseases in aged population has caused global mortality and morbidity. To manage such a fast occurring and fast spreading respiratory infection many health gadgets and apps have contributed significantly to control its impact like thermal scanners, pulse oximeters , health apps like arogya setu , online pharmacy apps etc. Apart from it India has more than 1.3 billion population and has constraints of health care personnel and facilities. The primary care health care provider must become more organized and automated. The internet and digital medical information will have a major disruptive effect on the practice of medicine. The solution to such health care challenges is real time, team-based and multi-disciplinary care which can only be attained by advanced health gadgets and health apps. Through health gadgets and apps the user can process the health information and manage body statistics in real time manner. Earlier authors have focussed over commercial or technological side of health gadgets and apps. This book and research work is an academic contribution for linking the user intention with benefits of health gadgets ad apps. The authors have tried to provide a insight about health gadget and apps in India, considering it promising solution and basis of proactive health care delivery model in India.

Healthcare and Medical Apps

Book Description

There's a quiet revolution (or maybe "evolution" is more accurate) going on in the healthcare industry.Over the last ten years over 250,000 mobile healthcare apps have appeared on the scene - and that's only the beginning. According to estimates from Zion Market Research the market for mHealth (mobile health) apps will top $100 billion worldwide in 2018. With smartphones and tablets becoming an essential part of our lives it makes sense to provide apps for those devices that can help organize your medical records, monitor your health, alert you to a possible medical problem, and help connect you to a healthcare professional. So how do smartphones function as medical devices? The cameras, microphones, and other sensors built into smartphones are improving all the time and can already be used to help diagnose certain illnesses The microphone for example, can be used to help detect asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder). There are also apps that use the camera and flash to diagnose blood disorders such as iron and hemoglobin deficiency. Smartphones can even by used to detect conditions such as osteoporosis by using the phone's motion sensor.Doctors and medical researchers are also turning to smartphone technology as an efficient way to handle electronic health data. Having patients collect data relating to their medical condition by using a smartphone app can make it much easier for a physician to form a diagnosis and to follow up on the effectiveness of the treatment the patient is undergoing. And that same data collected from many different patients can be a gold mine for medical research personnel, providing them with a massive database of clinical information never available before. This book covers just a few of the many different types of mobile health apps available on the market today. Dozens more (including many that offer new and more advanced technology) are being added everyday. Consider this book a sampler - and, if you're interested in building a mobile health care app yourself, you'll also find some introductory information about building your own app. Welcome to the future of healthcare!

Health Trackers

Book Description

New consumer technology is empowering us to take control of our day-to-day health. Leading tech writer Richard MacManus looks at what is out there now and what is in development, and what this might mean for our health in the future. Health Trackers tells the story of the rise of self-tracking — the practice of measuring and monitoring one’s health, activities or diet. Thanks to new technologies, such as smartphone apps and personal genomics, self-tracking is revolutionizing the health and wellness industries. Through interviews with tech developers, early adopters and medical practitioners, Richard MacManus explores what is being tracked, what tools and techniques are being used, the best practices of early adopters, and how self-tracking is changing healthcare. The first eight chapters focus on a particular type of, or approach to, self-tracking, for example, diet, daily activity and genetics. The final two chapters look at how the medical establishment is adopting, and adapting to, self-tracking. This timely book covers technologies still early in their evolution but poised to go mainstream, and rather than look at how to use specific gadgets, it focuses on the philosophy and usefulness of self- tracking in its many forms. Many of us are curious about it, but don’t understand the benefits (and sometimes risks) of these tools and practices. With no comparable book on the market, Trackers is the first to focus on consumer technologies and to help ordinary people negotiate the new health landscape.
