The author combines his knowledge and observations of his close friend Williams' life and work with material gathered through hours of interviews with Williams and many of his friends and associates, including art critics, art historians, and museum and gallery directors. His closeness to Williams gave the author the opportunity to observe his images as they took form, yet the author also provides objective commentary, which when combined with the interviews of the others provides a thorough examination of Williams' life and work.
