The clash between atheism and religion has become the defining battle of the 21st century. Books on and about atheism retain high profile and popularity, and atheist movements on both sides of the Atlantic capture headlines with high-profile campaigns and adverts. However, very little has been written on the history of atheism, and this book fills that conspicuous gap. Instead of treating atheism just as a philosophical or scientific idea about the non-existence of God, Atheists: The Origin of the Species places the movement in its proper social and political context. Because atheism in Europe developed in reaction to the Christianity that dominated the continent's intellectual, social and political life, it adopted, adapted and reacted against its institutions as well as its ideas. Accordingly, the history of atheism is as much about social and political movements as it is scientific or philosophical ideas. This is the story not only of Hobbes, Hume, and Darwin, but also of Thomas Aitkenhead hung for blasphemous atheism, Percy Shelley expelled for adolescent atheism, and the Marquis de Sade imprisoned for libertine atheism; of the French revolutionary Terror and the Soviet League of the Militant Godless; of the rise of the US Religious Right and of Islamic terrorism. Looking at atheism in its full sociopolitical context helps explain why it has looked so very different in different countries. It also explains why there has been a recent upsurge in atheism, particularly in Britain and the US, where religion has unexpectedly come to play such a significant role in political affairs. This leads us to a somewhat paradoxical conclusion: we should expect to hear more about atheism in the future for the simple reason that God is back.

The first in a series of books comprising an exposé of the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). This volume concentrates on polygamy and little known polyandry which is hidden from rank and file Mormons. Historical evidence proves the Mormon Church has rewritten its own history through lies, suppression, omission and interpolation; such that the truth is so well hidden from members; unless they look outside the Church for information; they will never know of the continued conspiracy to deceive them. Contains over 120 pages of appendices, including complete lists and analysis of all the wives and families of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, highlighting polyandrous relationships and children born into those unions; plus details of over a hundred children born post 1890 to polygamous wives of General Authorities who violated their own canonised Manifesto after they had covenanted to stop the practice. "... an important collective work for communication practitioners, students, and scholars who want to have a deeper understanding of film making in Asia and of the promotion of nationalism through communication." -- Media Asia "... a momentous contribution to the study of colonialism and postcoloniality in Asia... " -- The Journal of Asian Studies "This is an excellent model for studies in how the popular, art, and experimental cinemas function in the consideration of nationhood as a configuration of symbols.... This anthology provides an interesting discussion by offering a theoretical framework from which to examine the complex topics of nation, state, identity formation, and collective history in the realm of cinema. It becomes an even more effective tool by playing itself out within a diverse Asian context." -- Afterimage Essays examine the representation of the interlocking discourses of nationhood and history in Asian cinema, dealing with film traditions in Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, and Australia.

Lancaster provides the disproof of evolutionary stories about men, women, and the nature of desire of the heterosexual fables that pervade popular culture, from prime-time sitcoms to scientific theories about the so-called gay gene.

The Legend of Anne Bonny was recorded by Captain Charles Johnson in a book published in 1724 entitled A General History of the Robberies & Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates. Anne was a colonial aristocrat and the embellished daughter of the revered Chancellor of South Carolina. She rebelled at the age of sixteen when she eloped with James Bonny and was taken to the island of Providence to live among the pirates in 1716. Anne was a woman way before her time who had the courage to search for true love and discover the ultimate meaning of freedom. As she sailed the open seas as a pirate, Anne faced challenges and quests that no other woman of her era had ever endured. Her exploits branded her as an Ill-tempered harlot as she sailed under the command of her captain John Rackam and was pursued by the inescapable armed forces of the English Royal Colony Jamaica. Despite the public shame of her deeds, her father’s unending love prevailed during her times of trials and tribulations. We follow their adventures with intrigue and hope for Anne and her fellow pirates, as well as for her true love’s safety. Only several plot points are known about the life of Anne Bonny and over the years the connection between each has been filled in with speculation labeling her as an uncouth woman, while ignoring other parts of her legend that reveal a more noble character. The Profligate was written in order to resurrect her vibrant spirit and tell her story where all the plot points are included to reveal a more realistic portrait as to who Anne Bonny may truly have been.
