The Black President

Book Description

"With lively prose and sensitivity to context, this book offers a sweeping, authoritative history of the Obama presidency, focusing particularly on its impact and meaning vis-áa-vis African Americans. This interpretative account captures the America that made Obama's White House years possible, while at the same time rendering the America that resolutely resisted the idea of a Black chief executive, thus making conceivable the ascent of his most unlikely of successors"--

George Washington

Book Description

George Washington, the first president of the United States, is much more than a monument on Mount Rushmore. Who was Washington, the general, president, and husband? He was first and foremost a man of impeccable honor which, despite military adversity and political wrangling, never abandoned him. The Founding Fathers who squabbled and competed amongst themselves did agree on one thing: only Washington could lead the country, first in the country’s military fight for freedom and then as the man charged with transforming thirteen individual states into a united country. But in his youth, George Washington did not intend to become the Father of his Country. As a younger son of a middling class Virginian, he intended to earn his living as a surveyor, and in that role, he was introduced to the vast potential of the country that would one day be a nation. But when the death of his older brother made him the heir to Mount Vernon, Washington ascended to leadership in the military, political and social spheres of Virginia and the United States. Inside you will read about... ✓ The Washington's of Virginia ✓ Europe Exports its Wars to the Colonies ✓ Washington at Mount Vernon ✓ An Englishman no Longer ✓ Washington at War ✓ The Father of His Country ✓ Return to Mount Vernon As a member and later officer in the Virginia militia, he fought with the British army against the French as the two European powers struggled for control of the rich Ohio Valley. The British, who would refuse Washington a commission in their army, would later meet him in battle as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, fighting for independence against the forces of King George III. As a political leader, he would become the architect of the American government. As the master of Mount Vernon, Washington’s marriage to the wealthy Martha Dandridge Custis placed him among the elite of the Virginia aristocracy. His integrity established a model for subsequent generations to emulate. That few have managed to match his achievements is an indication of his influence and character. Meet George Washington, the man, and discover the identity of this remarkable leader.

Millard Fillmore: Biography Of A President

Book Description

Professor Robert J. Rayback’s history of Millard Fillmore is still the best biography of the 13th President of the United States. In one of the many unexplained, unfortunate quirks of history, most of the official papers of Fillmore’s administration were destroyed by his son. Scholars have consequently been denied the source material which is so essential to examining and gaining insight into the underlying truth of a Presidency. Regarding Fillmore, the few records that do survive can only be compiled piecemeal, a laborious task which few have had the stamina to undertake. Thus is the historical importance of Robert J. Rayback’s authoritative biography, which gives documented substance to Fillmore and his three years in office. Thoughtful and objective, Rayback’s balanced portrayal lauds Fillmore’s astuteness, as in sending Matthew Perry to open Japan to trade, and assays his faults, such as agreeing to run on the “Know Nothing” ticket in 1856. We see, as John Lord O’Brian, former regent of the University of the State of New York noted, “a devoted patriot who in all activities sought guidance from his own conscience during the critical events of the mid-nineteenth century.” Julius Pratt of the University of Buffalo concludes from the book that “without Fillmore there could have been no Lincoln.”-Print ed.

The Life of General Washington, First President of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Life of General Washington, First President of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The Author of the present work begs to state that through many Lives of Washington have been already written, none have been done on the plant of the present, namely, that of making the subject of the Memoir, as far as possible, his own Biographer. Fortunately, for this purpose, the materials are in sufficient abundance. It is well know that it was General Washington's custom, from a very early period, to record, in the form of Journals, Diaries, and Letters to public bodies or private correspondents of which he kept copies, all the most important incidents and circumstances of his life, from day to day. Out of these memorials, it was thought that such extracts and passages might be selected and brought together, as to give to the work, to a considerable extent, the interest, the authority, and even the form, of an Autobiography. There is reason to believe, too, that it was the expectation and wish of Washington that his Life should be thus written, for in several letters he expresses his conviction that his memoirs could not be written a satisfactory or effectual manner without a large selection from his papers. On this plan, therefore, as far as practicable, the present life has been written. The extracts from the writings of Washington, which constitute so considerable a portion of this Biography, have been drawn from various sources.
